Texsox
For most of my 40 or so years as a Sox fan, this is what we got. Teams that looked "competitive" but were quickly exposed as wannabes. You gotta love baseball for baseball's sake to keep your sanity. I understand y'all have the right to be angst filled, hair pulling out, raving lunatics. But hitting the playoffs once every ten years was about the norm in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. So IMNSHO, try to relax, allow the season to unfold, get to as many games as you can, enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of a MLB game. Most everyone here are very intelligent fans who can find the good stuff that casual fans overlook.
BigSqwert
The teams from the eras you mention weren't top 5 in payroll but I hear you.

BigSqwert
QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ May 11, 2010 -> 07:32 AM) Neither are these Sox. Close enough though.

Payroll wasn't that strong of a factor in the 70s and Veck's "Rent a Player" was suppose to make the difference.
jeffro2525
As a Missouri resident, I've cancelled the first leg of my thrice-yearly weekend/midweek treck to Kansas City this weekend. That's not to say I won't go to the last six at Kauffman Stadium this year, I just can't justify spending the money on a team that at best will probably be 14-20 coming into the game...that doesn't make me a "fair-weather" fan...I will still watch on the tube, but spending $600 on a weekend in KC just isn't in my budget, and unlike the last ten years, I'm not gonna push it. That being said...if we win two in Minnesota, I hold out the right to change my mind
iamshack
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 11, 2010 -> 07:24 AM) The teams from the eras you mention weren't top 5 in payroll but I hear you. I'm not sure why the payroll being high somehow entitles fans to a better team. Attendance is certainly not the reason that the payroll is amongst the upper third of the League. It's not like White Sox fans are showing good will year after year by coming out to the games regardless of the standings. Milkman delivers
So, we've reached the acceptance stage of the five stages of grief, eh?
NorthSideSox72
I will definitely say that, as bad as this team is right now, its still immensely more talented and capable of coming back than the great majority of teams I watched in the 80's, and late 90's. Soxbadger
Some times you swing and miss. Ill be here even if they go 0-162.
jeffro2525
I always try to compare the feel of a new team with that of a past White Sox team...watching and listening to this team reminds me so much of the 1995 group after the strike. That team sputtered out of the gate, and it just didn't seem like the talent or chemistry was ever there to make any kind of run at anything. Even when they won a few games in a row something always happened to halt the progress. We were shut-out, or the pitching would give up twelve runs, or a blown save...it was always something. That team ended 68-76...

Pre-free agency, and the early years after it, payroll really didn't matter like it does today.
MexSoxFan#1
It could be worse, we could be Cubs fans heading well into over a century of SUCKNESS...
