Deal possibly reached to end Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy

Considering the military supposedly has completed these studies repeatedly, this sounds like an almost complete end to the policy, with a few legalistic kowtows to make it more palatable for a couple people to vote for it.

President Obama, the Pentagon and leading lawmakers reached agreement Monday on legislative language and a time frame for repealing the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, clearing the way for Congress to take up the measure as soon as this week.

...

House Democratic leaders were meeting Monday night and considering taking up the measure as soon as Thursday. But even if the measure passes, the policy cannot not change until after Dec. 1, when the Pentagon completes a review of its readiness to deal with the changes. Mr. Obama, his defense secretary and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff would also be required to certify that repeal would not harm readiness.

The measure could enable gay men and lesbians to serve openly in the military for the first time, ending a policy that Mr. Obama, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, all say they oppose.

Representative Patrick J. Murphy, Democrat of Pennsylvania and a leading advocate in the House for repeal, is hoping to attach the proposal to a defense authorization bill that will come up for a vote on Thursday.

In the Senate, Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, independent of Connecticut, intends to introduce the language on Thursday in the Armed Services Committee. In a letter to Mr. Obama on Monday, Mr. Murphy, Mr. Lieberman and Senator Carl M. Levin, the Armed Services Committee chairman, announced support for the proposal and asked the White House for its “official views.”

Doubt it.

Denying equal access, opportunity and rights to people because of their sexual orientation is bigotry. Period.

But you know I'm the most bigoted, racist mother f'er ever. I'm conservative after all.

I hope I always separate the bigots of the far right from the mainstream conservatives. There are folks at the extreme of both parties who embarrass the mainstream.

The Republicans are going to attempt to Filibuster the Defense Department allocation bill because they hate the troops are unwilling to give anyone in the Pentagon final say over DADT.

Opponents of overturning the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy are cranking up their rhetoric and threatening roadblocks on multiple fronts, including what promises to be a fierce Senate floor fight, as the tide appears to be turning against them.

...

“I’ll do everything in my power,” the Arizona Republican said, citing letters from the four service chiefs urging Congress not to act before a Pentagon review of the policy is complete. “I’m going to do everything I can to support the men and women of the military and to fight what is clearly a political agenda.”

Another Armed Services Republican, Sen. Roger Wicker, also said he would support a filibuster if the repeal language makes it into the version of the bill that goes to the floor, possibly during the post-Memorial Day work period.

“If it is adopted, I will not sign the conference report, and there will be an attempt to filibuster the bill on the floor,” the Mississippi Republican said. “It’s a major mistake.”

Wicker described repeal as “a huge shift,” adding: “This bill is not the place for social policy. ... Why there is a need suddenly to accelerate the process, to send a signal to our service members that the assessment is nothing more than eye wash, is beyond me.”

The GOP Senators’ comments came as Lieberman’s proposal gained traction with members of the Armed Services panel. A Democratic holdout, Sen. Ben Nelson (Neb.), declared Wednesday he will support the amendment, as did moderate Republican Sen. Susan Collins (Maine).

Supposedly, Jim Webb has said he'll vote against the proposal in committee, no word yet on whether he'd support a Filibuster as far as I can see. If they could hold together the usual 40, minus Susan Collins plus Jim Webb, they could have 41 votes.

Yes. Because of bigotry.

We were discussing homosexuality in English yesterday, and someone brought up the whole "God made Adam and Eve, not two Adams" argument.

Know what else isn't in the Bible? Cell phones...or cars...or you know, a lot of crap we have.

It is extremely idiotic though, that people even consider keeping it in place.

I wonder if Cindy McCain got a "cold chill down her spine" this time

They don't hate gay people, Balta, they just want more reviews! And reviews of reviews! We can never be too careful about letting the insidious gays into the military, you know. Look what it has done to other countries.

I didn't say they hated Gay People only, I said they hated all of the troops. Because that would have been the applied standard in 2008 if there had been a strong effort to shoot down a defense department funding bill.

One of my kids tried the "homosexuality doesn't happen in nature", when I replied (falsely those damn dolphins) that sex for pleasure doesn't happen in nature so that must be "unnatural" he deflated.

It's not just dolphins that do it for fun.

"It's against the laws of nature" is just a restatement of the biblical condemnations. Homosexuality occurs in many species.

You sir, are a hero.

My teacher asked a student the other day to a girl who was against gays "When did you decide you started liking boys?"

If we let gays in, we might as well let men shower with the women!

Might as well let them **** goats and fight while high.
