Peavy expresses concern about tired arm

Based on my reading, I think the Whitesox.com article is somewhat less inflammatory than the title, but when Whitesox.com writes that title I'm going to get nervous.

"You're going to have starts where you're not sharp," Peavy said. "My arm just didn't feel alive."

Peavy is set to take the hill Sunday against the Rays, but said he has work to do before his next start.

"I've won many games going out there feeling like that," he said. "I knew what to do, but I just didn't do it. I'm going to get some treatment, see if I can get some more life in the arm [before Sunday]."

I think we're already nervous. Peavy has been very disappointing outside of two good starts. His saying his arm is tired is bad, obviously, but also sheds some light. If he can do some "treatment" and pitch well on Sunday I'll have some hope. But he needs to string together about 4 very good starts to gather some believers again.

I wonder if, once June 1 rolls around, it might not make sense to give Peavy a 15 day "Tired arm" DL trip and give Hudson a few starts.

I have an even better idea... How about when June 1 rolls around, he's sent to the Cardinals or the Cubs or to the Mets or some other NL team in exchange for some prospects. I think maybe he belongs in the NL.

No one's giving up crap for Peavy right now. You woulnd't even get prospects if you paid a chunk of his contract.

Yes, he has clearly shown that it is the AL he cannot conquer..........

As for a truthful statement. He needs to play some more long toss, lots of it.

I don't think there'd be anything wrong with that. Something strange is going on with Peavy right now whether it's physical or mental. He pitched extremely well last year after coming off the DL, and he's had two outstanding starts this year. I know that even average and even sub-average pitchers have great outings, but when Peavy's on, he is unhittable. So, I'm wondering if maybe it's more mental.

One other thing that bugs me about Peavy is how he shakes off a lot of pitches. Watch Buehrle pitch, and you'll see him get the sign and throw the ball. Peavy shakes off pitch after pitch before throwing. Maybe he should start listening to his catchers, especially considering AJ is quite good at calling games.

It won't happen. He'll pitch through this. He's got to get sharp. His stuff has been there for plenty of the starts, his command has just been shoddy most of the time.

Depends on how you define his "Stuff". Are you talking about speed on the fastball as the only measure of his stuff, or are you talking about movement on his fastball and bite on his slider? Because a lot of starts (i.e. last night) he hasn't had either of the latter.

That seems like a mechanical issue; body positioning, follow through, rotation, etc.

Just put him on the 15 day DL and call up Dan Hudson or Carlos Torres. They can't do much worse.

Once Peavy's arm is back in full strength, we'll go on from there...

Was this a joke? Shoulda put it in green.

If it's not a joke, uh Peavy needs to pitch. He's been lousy this season.

Well, it was a joke, because I'm not saying he's hurt, but he's certainly not helping the team so why take any chances this season. Just put him on the shelf and have him ready for 2011.

I don't understand how hes been so bad, his numbers don't look that bad..

His last 5 starts, hes not walking people anymore hes getting strikeouts.. hes not really getting hit around that badly and yet there's 6 runs on the board for each of his last two starts..

He really hasn't been walking people since his first 5 starts, its just weird what the problem is..

He's doing his best to control the FIP, but he's not getting much luck. His FIP is currently 4.72 and his xFIP is 4.29.

Plus, giving up three home runs isn't going to help your cause...

He was bad last night because he threw pitches that were right down the plate with no movement and/or bite. I'm not worried about him saying he has a tired arm, as his fastball was excellent last night.

But...if you're suffering from a tired arm, those things can be the qualities you lose.

He's never thrown a no-hitter, so that's not true.

I think a lot of it is learning a new league. Pitchers seem to have more success going from the AL to the NL. There's a lot more good hitters in the AL. I'll give him a pass this year if he doesn't live up to his ace status. Next year......NO!
