T R U
I just bought my first car today, and I need to get insurance.. Sadly, I can not get liability only due to me financing this car.. so is there anywhere that I can get some cheap ass insurance? Im lookin at some of this stuff and its like almost $200 a month, which is just ridiculous to pay when I will most likely never need this insurance.. flippedoutpunk
$200 a month!?!?! holy crap dude! unfortunately i cant help when it comes to this topic cause i use USAA which is for military families. I pay a 400 dollar six month premium which is about 60 bucks a month for full coverage. It used to be 650 dollars but then i turned 25 and my insurance rate immediately went down 250 dollars. i dont think ive ever heard of 200 a month though.. maybe for someone that was 18 with 6 accidents under their belt already. Balta1701
Are you particularly young or is this a particularly expensive car? Or do you have a history of traffic violations?
ChiSox_Sonix
I pay $57 a month for Geico and its by far the cheapest ive been quoted. Even my friend who works at Liberty mutual couldnt even come close even with cutting corners and giving me deals.
southsider2k5
People up here aren't going to be any help as each company has to be licenced in the states that they sell in.

StrangeSox
A lot of insurance companies look at credit history also, FWIW. I pay about $90/ month through Geico, and I'm a 25 y.o. single male with a sports car.

jasonxctf
oh... so you're that guy. Avoid Apollo Insurance. Someone hit me who had Apollo. Got an estimate of $700, they said, we'll pay $250. Take it or leave it. I could have had my insurance company chase them (Allstate) but my rep said their success rate with this is 5% and could take up to 2 years. Funny how the difference came in just under my $500 deductible. scam artists.

Rooftop Shots
If insurance compnies lived up to what they say, then technically insurance would be almost free. Here's my logic. Let's say you have to pay 1200 dollars per year. Allstate claims that you can save up to 435 dollars every year by calling them. You get their policy, and now you are down to 765 dollars per year. Next, call Progressive. They claim to save you up to 335 dollars per year. You cancell Allstate and get Progressive. Now you are down to 430 dollars per year. State Farm claims to save you 400 dollars per year. You cancell Progressive and get State Farm. Now you are down to 130 dollars per year. Lastly, call Geico. They claim to save you 15%. You sign with them and now you are approximately in the 109 dollar per year range. Divide that into 12 monthly payments of about 9 bucks. There, how's that for some twisted math? Unless you are a terrible driver, car insurance is the biggest scam ever.. I don't see why I need to pay $2,000+ a year for something im not going to need.. its been almost 10 years since I had an accident/ticket, and that was literally one month after I got my license when I was 16.. Thats like $20,000-30,000 dollars spent on insurance when I have ever only needed a fraction of that money..

lostfan
QUOTE (flippedoutpunk @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 02:09 AM) oh my god thats horrible! thank my lucky stars for USAA. ill never complain about them again! USAA wasn't always all that with me, back when I was about 21 every insurance company was trying to f*** me, USAA's rates were just slightly less s***ty than everyone else's, although I don't think anyone could beat what I'm paying now. When I bought my first car the Geico rep actually quoted me $3,000 for 6 months over the phone... yeah. Seriously, she did. I ended up paying like $1200 for the next few years (this was in Georgia). Then I moved to Maryland and had Progressive, and I was paying about $150 a month - you'd think your rates get lower when you get closer to the magic number of 25 but they didn't for me. What makes me hate auto insurance: About 4 years ago I was still paying those inflated rates with Progressive "because I am in a statistical category more likely to get in an accident" as a 24-year old male who is still paying nearly the same rates he did when he was 20. My wife got a case of the dumbass while she was driving my car and backed into a parked taxi and caused some minor damage. So the taxi driver got a claim of $313 for the damage... no big deal right, that's why I'm paying insurance, and since I am "more likely" to get in an accident (even though she was driving and not me, and I had never had an accident, even to this day knock on wood) that's why I pay higher rates. BUT they called me and said they were raising my premium by $280 because of that claim. That same day I cancelled my policy and got another one. I was thinking what the f*** am I paying insurance for? I could've paid that out of pocket and not had it affect my rates at all. Edited June 9, 2010 by lostfan

There, how's that for some twisted math? Except that logic is faulty because the companies are not claiming guaranteed savings. Drivers who switched to those companies saved that much. That means there were certain drivers who could save money by switching, so they did, and are being used as a basis for questionable statistics You may not save by switching. In fact you might pay more because you keep dropping insurance coverage which probably looks bad on a credit report (although I don't know that for sure). And that guy is the real problem. Because Allstate and every other company has to pay a lot of money to defend against fraud claims, we all have to chip in a lot more. Iwritecode
I've got Liberty Mutual and I'm paying 1585 for 12 months but that's for full coverage on 2 vehicles and a pop-up camper. I also have discounts because of multiple cars, and having our house insurance with the same company.

I understand that logic, however imagine if you accidently caused serious damage to someone. (medical) And the bills totalled $200,000. Do you have $200,000 laying around? Shoot, I'm 31. I've got 3 cars insured (mine, wifes and play car), a $400k house insured, wedding rings, and life insurance. I probably pay $2,000 a year for all of that through Allstate and State Farm. Side note on life insurance. Experienced this first hand. My father in law, died back in 2006. Died at 54. He was paying something like $300/yr for life insurance for probably 20 years. So $6,000 total. His widow got $250,000 in life insurance proceeds.
