Does it matter that Quentin has sucked this season?

He's batting .286 with a .995 OPS with runners in scoring position. And he improved that tonight.

He has sucked, but also, he has kind of not sucked.

I am sure someone smarter than me will explain that he is changing his approach with ducks on the pond.

I also will venture to speculate that he might inch closer to the plate with runners in scoring positon because he figures there will be less of a chance of getting plunked.

But if you figure in his defensive play none of this matters because his ass should already be on the DL or a two seater bound for Charlotte.

Quentin just double off the big wall in Pittsburgh in RF, but I noticed something about his swing. Now I am no hitting expert, but I do pride myself in understanding mechanics and fundamentals. Quentin swings looks excessively long. The reason being when he swings he doesnt seem to throw his hands at the ball, something that produces short quick movement to get the head of the bat on the ball. Instead Quentin seems to dip his hands down, like a hitch, the head of the bat drops down, and then he sort of wraps the bat out and around his body. This makes a much longer, slower swing. Thats my evaluation of Quentin's hitting suck-age to this point.

Speaking of RISP splits . . .

Alex Rios had really been struggling with runners in scoring position this season but has turned it on of late (these things tend to even out) and when I checked his numbers today I was surprised to see just how affective he's been given his early struggles:

RISP: .302/.397/.491/.887 63 PA

2 out, RISP: .400/.464/.680/1.144 28 PA

Men on: .294/.384/.553/.937 99 PA

Close&Late: .333/.405/.606/1.011 37 PA

He's not a very good fielder (unless there are defensive metrics that prove me wrong) and has an OPS barely above .700 and an OBP barely above .300. So yes, it does matter he sucks.

Try the polar opposite.

It matters that he sucks. There was some discussion a while back about the fact that Quentin was on pace for 93 RBIs while batting barely .200. That is a hard .200, and he's making it count. But imagine if he was batting .260 and had another 5 or 6 HRs and another 8-10 RBIs.

I see the point though regarding his good hitting with RISP. But overall, yeah, he's not doing well.

I didn't start the thread with the intent of making the point that everything is fine with Quentin even though he has a .700 OPS while MLB average for a RF is like .800. Overall he has sucked. But point being there are varying levels and degrees of sucking. And if you're only getting x number of hits, managing to get them in situations that count definitely tempers the magnitude of his sucking. If a guy bats .200 for the whole year but bats .500 with RISP and drives in 120 runs, that's extremely productive and it kinda doesn't matter that he hit .200. Obviously that extreme example is never going to happen.

Mainly, I just found it interesting how markedly better his splits have been with runners on, and even more so with runners in scoring position. Either way, the jackass should start hitting all the time.
