More things from ESPN Insider

Chicago White Sox: Now just two games in back of Kansas City, the White Sox would like very much to add another starting pitcher. Tops on their list is Jeff Suppan -- who, if a poll were taken today -- may well be America's most talked about man. Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune reports that general manager Kenny Williams has been working the phones and is still very much in the trader mode in the weeks following his deals for Roberto Alomar and Carl Everett.

i just got done reading espn insider, what i came away with is that balt is really playing hardball in the ponson trade front. they are really not running scared. i sometime wonder if they are expecting too much.

next is cincy, first they gave away williamson and now they are playing hardball with the rest of the pitchers. i think they realize that maybe they really don't have to rush and get rid of the pitchers, but they can do it in the offseason as well.

those are my thoughts.

That kinda scared me, but it seems like Rex knows alot of the Barons so ill take his word for it.

Thanks Tony........ I've been wrong before, but I am also smart enough to know that you can tell a lot by watching a player and you can also learn a lot by looking into numbers and not just taking them at face value.

The perfect examples of that are Arnie Munoz and Mark Buehrle....

Munoz has a 6.20 ERA in AAA..... But he also has a 4.04 ERA since April 15. I would much rather have Arnie, who struggled in 3 outings in the first two weeks of the season, over a guy who has just been bad all year. If you just look at his numbers, you have no way of seeing that.

If you just look at Mark Buehrle's numbers you see a 9-10 record with 4.21 ERA. Pretty damned average. But if you know how Mark's season has gone you think that Mark was just bad in the first half of the season. Look into his numbers and you will see that really all Mark had was a bad May and one bad outing in April. Mark's ERA for May was 7.16 and he was 0-4. In April Mark was 2-3 with a 3.92 ERA even with one horrendous outing against Cleveland and very little run support. In June and July, he was 6-2 with a 3.49 ERA. The point is, Mark Buehrle is not representative of a 9-10 record with a 4.21 ERA.

Digging into one's numbers can tell a lot. It can also take a lot of time. LOL

Cotts isnt that good. He has horrible control at AA. Pitchers like that dont turn into decent MLBers...

He's not that good?

His numbers are downright filthy and he started the futures game?

If that's not good, I don't know what is.

used to look forward to the nights when Suppan started for the Royals against the Sox.

he's wayyyyyy overpriced if he brings more than a marginal pitching prospect.

If the Pirates ask for Cotts, Reed, Wing or Malone, hang up the phone

I'd be willing to give up Malone. I'd prefer Malone going in a package to land Ponson.

I'd play hardball with the Orioles and I think they've got most GM's to sour and at the last second I'd come in with an offer and say take it or leave it.

Ponson isn't a short term acquisition, he's a long term one too.
