It wouldn't matter if the interim GM or the homeless guy on the street said it, Dan Haren is going to cost a lot to acquire, and that's not an opinion. There is a huge demand for quality starting pitching in the league, and, whether you'd like to admit it or not, a 4.38 ERA is a quality starting pitcher, even at $12.5 mill, considering the success he's had in the past and that much of that inflated ERA was largely due to the first 2 months of the season (when he gave up 16 homers in 74 innings). In his last 7 starts, he's put up a 2.92 ERA and allowed only 3 home runs in 49.1 IP.

So which is it, do you think he is a quality starting pitcher who is having a lot of success recently or do you think is is someone who is pitching like s***, leaving his pitches up, and lost velocity?

Because earlier in the thread you said this.....

why would you want to trade for someone that is pitching like s***? Leaving his pitches up along with less velocity...sure, that sounds like it'll be a blast at USCF.

So we shouldn't get him because he is too good and will cost a lot, or because he is too bad and will cost a lot? Which side of the fence are you on?

I just generally don't think the Sox should be looking to acquire a front line starting pitcher period, regardless of whether he is a show stopper or there are red flags that may indicate an injury. The marginal effect that adding a good starting pitcher would have to this team would be far less than the marginal effect of adding a huge bat. Danks, Floyd, Buehrle, Garcia, and Hudson make up more than a formidable rotation, but this lineup, while effective now, won't get it done in the long run.

Even with Peavy gone, we still have some of the best starting pitching in baseball (assuming Hudson can be adequate, and I think he can). Adding a bat to a mediocre lineup everyday means a lot more than an starting pitcher for 14 or 15 starts.
