Balta1701
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 01:39 PM) If they know AIDS is passed on by unprotected sex, what is left to know? The only other thing you can teach them is that the way to ensure they will never get AIDS is to not have sex at all, and since you can't teach that, what else is there? You could also teach that Condom use can be quite effective, for example.
southsider2k5
QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 12:43 PM) where testing facilities are, where you can go for help if you have AIDS, pass out free protection, offer counseling etc. A big part of the battle is getting people tested. Most of that is after the fact, and immaterial to "education". Again if people know the disease is spread through unprotected sex, the rest is just window dressing. Since I haven't seen any figures posted proving that I am wrong about people knowing that you can pass AIDS through unprotected sex, I would contend that "education" has been a complete failure here, in the same vein that the left holds abstinence programs as "failures" because kids still get pregnant. If you know the risks and still engage in dangerous behavior, you have pretty much ignored the education anyway. I'm not sure what giving people more to ignore is going to do to fix that. I purposefully used the term "unprotected sex". People know that this one act can pass the AIDS virus. Therefore to educate them again, about the exact same thing, is going to do what exactly? NorthSideSox72
What's being argued here isn't the point. Its not that anyone disagrees that its better if people know about AIDS and how its transmitted. Its about whether or not these ads do anything whatsoever to help with that. If the ads cost, say, a million dollars... how much on average does the city pay in uncovered health care costs for each new AIDS case? And note I said how much does it cost the CITY, who are the ones paying for the ads. If the number is, say, $1000 (I have no idea what it is, just illustrating), then that means you'd better think that 3 months of a few billboards is going to net you 1,000 fewer cases or more. Otherwise, you are wasting money. Now, if hospitals and insurance companies are paying a ton of money for these cases, which I am sure they are, then THEY should be doing preventative work to protect themselves, on THEIR dime. Not taxpayer money.

Without reliable access to the medications, which cost patients in the AIDS Drug Assistance Program an average of $12,000 a year, people with H.I.V. are more likely to develop full-blown AIDS, transmit the virus and require expensive hospitalizations. Link. A large chunk of that cost does wind up coming from state governments. However, that's also not including the costs a city may bear if they run any sort of community health clinics as well. For once, that's data I can't find. I wouldn't be surprised if it was higher than you thought though. Even without that though, I think most everyone knows that Advil is a painkiller, but that doesn't mean that I don't see Advil commercials reminding me of that. lostfan
This past weekend I went out with a stripper (ok, you're probably thinking WTF there must be a long story involved - the answer is yes, there is) and she introduces me to a friend at the bar, also a stripper but both dressed normally since they weren't at work. Stripper #2 is really friendly. Stripper #1 leans over to me and says "yeah, she is really cool and a sweetheart, but don't drink anything after her." lol. Don't gotta tell me twice. She texts me at the table and says rumor has it she has HIV. I know you can't really get HIV from drinking out of the same cup as someone (at least I'm pretty sure that's how I remember), but still... yeesh. The short version is that I was out with this group of guys, one of them wanted to f*** this Filipina waitress so me, so I played point guard for him and hooked them up, because I broke the touch barrier on her for him. In the process I caught the attention of one stripper in particular (the one who did not have HIV) who gave me her # and stopped just short of bringing me home with her (incidentally, doing this way too many times is how Stripper 2 ended up getting HIV). I didn't do anything with Stripper 1 for the record. But she was trying to get me to buy her dinner and drinks and stuff when we went out which was funny. I was like no sweetheart, the wallet-draining act ends when you leave your job, and I treat you like a regular girl. Jenksismyhero
I would hope not, that's the best part. What kind of stripper are we talking about here? This one wasn't that attractive in the face but she had a sweet body. The one with HIV was cute. My favorite one was smoking hot but she was a lesbian (still Facebook friended me anyway, lol). The whole situation caught me off guard. Granted, strippers are friendly and flirt with you but I never had one actually come for me like that. I was nice to her. lol.
