ChiliIrishHammock24
"Torn labrum in the left shoulder, probably arthroscopic surgery at the end of the year... No bueno" Terrible, terrible news. Bad for those of use who really like Morel and hope he can be our future 3B, and bad news for those who think he was one of our biggest trading chips. Ugh. SoxAce
Yikes. What a terrible year for high picked sox prospects. Edited July 22, 2010 by J.Reedfan8
scenario
So when did this happen? He batted in the 8th inning of today's game.
ChiliIrishHammock24
Just got an update. Brent said he is going to play through it. I didn't realize you could play with a torn labrum, but he is going to give it a shot. MRI to be done next week, and likely surgery in off-season. I would think this still would caution teams away from trading for him (good news for me), but I just hope it doesn't effect him too much. It's his left shoulder (non throwing shoulder) that he hurt at Cal Poly in the past.

I'm sure the doctors know better than me, but why play through it, get it done and start the rehab to be ready for next year. He has no trade value now, get healthy!! Friend of Nordhagen
Maybe it's a blessing. I've never seen him play, but based on the reports of others and his numbers, he's the kind of guy I think the Sox need more of -- solid line-drive hitter, good defender. Maybe now he'll stay put. BearSox
He should wind up being fine. Not really worried, this is just something that will hurt his trade value more than anything else, and even in that case, I don't think it would hurt it a lot, unless a team saw Morel as an immediate MLB player for some reason. SoxAce
Anything dealing with the shoulder for any player (pitcher or position player) is not good. But if there is one good thing to take from it, it wasn't his throwing shoulder.
JPN366
I imagine he will be DH'ing a lot more the rest of the season if he manages to play through it.
NorthSideSox72
Wow. Injuries so far this season to prospects in the system: Mitchell Thompson Phegley (illness) Morel Shirek Remenowsky When the system is already thin, that's no good.

Chisoxfn
Very interesting news. I assume he'd be relegated to DH, but since it is his left labrum, would it be possible for him to still actually play in the field? Also, where did you hear the news? SoxnGiants
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 06:53 AM) Very interesting news. I assume he'd be relegated to DH, but since it is his left labrum, would it be possible for him to still actually play in the field? Also, where did you hear the news? I've had a torn labrum, also in my left shoulder like Morel. Depends on the severity, but considering he's playing through it, this is probably relatively minor. Shouldn't affect him playing next year. For me, hitting was compeltely unaffected - but I could not throw without pain (I lost a lot of arm strength as well) from my normal throwing angle. I just adjusted my motion and played through the pain. Eventually I took 8 months off and it's fully healed now. I was told surgery would have decreased recovery time but since it didn't bother me all that much and I could still play hockey I declined surgery. chw42
Either way, we just lost a trade chip.
WHITESOXRANDY
I had that surgery. It's bad but since it's not his throwing shoulder that makes a huge difference. He'll be fine.

witesoxfan
I don't even know why this would have any effect on his trade value. It's his non-throwing shoulder, and he will be able to play through it.
BaseballNick
There's no question that an injury like that would affect his swing. I had something similar (obviously I can't speak to how severe Brent's is) but it was pretty brutal. Long-term, I don't see it being an issue. I would still think this hurts his trade value even though it's not a major injury for an infielder.

BearSox
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 09:27 PM) I would think staring at any type of surgery has to drop your sexiness to other teams at least a little bit. It probably does, but if it is a type of surgery that a team knows he can come back from 100%, it probably wouldn't hurt it as bad as some here make it out to be. I doubt anyone will make a trade for Morel thinking he is MLB ready or a centerpiece. Morel is nothing more than a throw in prospect for any deal, even before the injury.
