Balta1701
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 04:45 PM) Beckham's been a huge disappointment at 2nd base. He plays the position like he has no athleticism at all. His UZR is 1.7 on the year. He's about average on everything...maybe an extra run or two given up via errors, but everything else is at least "average".

Hudson's not ready for the majors...not having a slider makes him just a mediocre pitcher. Bah, he's ready for the majors...just 95% of pitchers need an adjustment period once they get there. The only ones who don't are guys like Stras who simply have incredible stuff. The problem is that we want him to have zero adjustment period and do so ina pennant race. JohnCangelosi
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 02:47 PM) Jeez, Peavy's injury was such a killer. Hudson's not ready for the majors...not having a slider makes him just a mediocre pitcher. No wipeout slider really cost Huddy there to Suzuki, we're in a pennant race we cannot afford to be throwing guys out there that need to learn
fathom
QUOTE (Real @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 09:48 PM) Maybe we're overvaluing Hudson a *tad* Of course we are, but the problem is there's no one else to take his spot. Even going back to last year, I was never impressed with Hudson and hoped we'd trade him. However, Peavy's injury just crippled everything. caulfield12
Beckham taking a questionable route to that groundball and not leaving his feet on hit really hurt us that inning. The A's announcers were pretty shocked he didn't at least stop it...if not make the play and keep it 1-0. Well, we're going to have to withstand a run from Minnesota, they now get the Royals, Greinke versus Liriano to start the series. Balta1701
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 04:51 PM) How's he ready for the majors if he doesn't have enough confidence in a 3rd pitch to throw it? Because you're not going to develop confidence that you can get major league hitters out with your 3rd pitch by throwing it in AAA when you're already better than the guys you're facing? bobryansson
After all the ugliness in that inning, I can "accept" it as a youngster learning the game... but Beckham's effort deficiency sticks with me. Even Stone noted it. Then he looked like terrible Gordon at the plate.
fathom
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 09:52 PM) Because you're not going to develop confidence that you can get major league hitters out with your 3rd pitch by throwing it in AAA when you're already better than the guys you're facing? It's not like he was dominating AAA though. There was still a lot for him to work on, including limiting pitches per inning and being able to get lefty hitters out. AWhiteSoxinNJ
If these last 2 games don't scream "We need to trade for a starting pitcher" then I dunno what does. We don't need another bat, get some arms.

fathom
Hudson has to hold them here. We're getting back into the mode of "7-10 Sox hitters retired in a row". Shades of April/May. This homestand couldn't come at a better time. Maybe King Felix will have a blister problem!
caulfield12
I guess all we can do is read it as Beckham's inexperience. The ball had a ton of overspin on it, and it got on him faster than he was ready...causing him to take the wrong angle and misread the play. Still don't understand why he didn't leave his feet though, and try to block it and prevent 2 runs from scoring.
