Balta1701
The other potential implication of that belief...that Q's timing works best when he's close to 100%...is that I think there was probably something (Wrist? Shoulder? Foot?) nagging Carlos for the first 2 months of the season that we didn't hear about. Good at bat for Barton.

Balta1701
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 04:21 PM) That change just dropped off a table. Man, we're talking about a RHP throwing 94ish with a changeup dropping off the table. That was McCarthy to a t.

fathom
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 08:22 PM) Man, we're talking about a RHP throwing 94ish with a changeup dropping off the table. That was McCarthy to a t. Different arm angle though...I'd say Hudson throws harder but McCarthy had better curve.
chw42
With the base open there, you might as well just walk Cust.
fathom
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 08:24 PM) A lot of pitches here in the 1st. Hudson still has very little command of his fastball.
chw42
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 03:24 PM) Different arm angle though...I'd say Hudson throws harder but McCarthy had better curve. I don't like Hudson's mechanics. Too much bend in the elbow.

Balta1701
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 04:24 PM) Different arm angle though...I'd say Hudson throws harder but McCarthy had better curve. With McCarthy though, his effectiveness depended entirely on whether or not he was effective with the change. (Of course, that means that he had to throw strikes with the fastball to set up the change, but that pitch was everything).

TomPickle
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 03:26 PM) He throws a lot like Peavy. I think his motion is closer to Jered Weaver.
bobryansson
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 02:26 PM) He throws a lot like Peavy. Maybe Jake can take Hudson (if he stays) under his wing... unless that would slow recovery from the surgery.
chw42
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 03:26 PM) He throws a lot like Peavy. I haven't seen an analysis of Hudson's throwing motion yet, but it doesn't look good from just watching him pitch. Peavy's motion is a lot more violent. chw42
Umpire isn't calling the high strike. Hudson's thrown two of those to Ellis. Both balls.
fathom
Hudson's going to have to change something up so he doesn't drop his back shoulder so much before throwing his fastball. It's really making it hard for him to repeat his delivery. As a two-pitch pitcher, you have to have better command than he does.
