Balta1701
QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 10:33 AM) how can someone hate Manny "as a person" we dont know him. We know he's a millionaire cheater/fraud. That's a pretty easy one.
BigSqwert
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 09:34 AM) We know he's a millionaire cheater/fraud. That's a pretty easy one. And puts no effort into the game when he's not motivated.
iamshack
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 08:10 AM) I'm torn on the Manny thing. I mean, the division is within reach, and Manny would probably be a difference maker, addressing the team's single biggest need. But I agree with some other posters that have said Manny is pretty much everything that is wrong with baseball. If they do acquire him, I sure as hell hope they don't sign him for 2011. After everything that has been posted about the DH debalcle this year, how can people rule out the possibility of Manny for next year at this point in time? ThunderBolt
I think Manny is an SOB, but he's also a hell of a ballplayer. I'm willing to take that, because it could have a profound affect on the middle of the order for this ballclub.
NorthSideSox72
QUOTE (Wedge @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 09:30 AM) The bullpen would like to know where you've been lately and why you haven't returned its calls. Well until the injury issues came up, even with the recent performances, the bullpen didn't concern me. They were very solid most of the year, then hit a speedbump seemingly in unison. I don't think that will last. Assuming Thornton and Putz's issues really are as minor as they sound, then I still believe that. If either or both are out for the year, then yeah, the bullpen starts to scare me a bit. But zero doubt in my mind, the most glaring need all season has been for a real bat at DH. NorthSideSox72
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 09:48 AM) Yeah. Completely serious. 1. No numbers could possible address this, and you know it. 2. If you aren't aware of Manny's tendency to miss games and play half-ass, then you haven't been paying attention to Manny (which I wouldn't blame you for). BigSqwert
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 09:48 AM) Yeah. Completely serious. His KAAH when playing on a 1st place team or a team within 3 games of 1st place is 1.32. In every other situation he is at a 0.75.
Princess Dye
heh 'are you serious' was responded to two completely different ways he's not the first superstar to turn it off at times. that's the price of getting extremely talented players. many of them dont feel the fire lit under them. mark kotsay keeps the fire burnin'. nightly. in that case - i dont want the fire. there's nothing to be torn about. it's not even half a season and he can hit Edited August 25, 2010 by Princess Dye

If you aren't aware of Manny's tendency to miss games and play half-ass, then you haven't been paying attention to Manny (which I wouldn't blame you for). How are there no numbers to address it? Shouldn't there be some correlating statistics that show how much of a slacker he is? The only number you can really point to is games played, of which he has played in at least 130 games until 2009 in which he was suspended for 50 games and this year. Considering what we have and what $ figures you guys are throwing around, I'm not really sure how that even enters the discussion.

Harry Chappas
Manny's motivation is a nice DH deal for next year.....oh and possibly facing the Yanks this weekend and Red Sox 7 times may be incentive enough..along with a playoff run. He also mashes at the Cell. If Rios is hurting, this is a no brainer.

You are either being intentionally pedantic to make some sort of point, or you actually believe that all things in baseball can be directly and clearly demonstrated statistically. Which is it? iamshack
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 11:32 AM) You are either being intentionally pedantic to make some sort of point, or you actually believe that all things in baseball can be directly and clearly demonstrated statistically. Which is it? Excuse me? His lowest OPS for a full season is .881. Are you kidding me? Do you realize how good of a hitter Manny has been over the course of his career? Considering the options facing this team for next year, how on earth are you going to explain passing on a player that good? Now unless you can point out some sort of tangible evidence that the guy is not easily better than other in-house options, I'm not sure how you can dismiss him out of hand. If he didn't "slack" would he hit 60 homers and 200 RBIs every year? Missing huge series against the Yanks because he was "sick" even though he was spotted closing down night clubs all weekend might be one piece of evidence for slacking.
