CWSOX45
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:23 PM) lol@waiver wire trades. That's for overpaid underachievers who teams are trying to dump. Not true. A lot of guys still have value even if they are underperforming, even you have to admit that. Carl Pavano, Alex Rios, and Adam Dunn (From Cincy to Arizona) were all key pick-ups over the last couple of years past July 31st.

Chisoxfn
We have to hope we can pull Manny or another higher priced bat. I still think Abreu or Matsui are potential options who would slide to us, unless Minny or someone would put in a claim to block it.
Soxbadger
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:24 PM) Well it looked like we got caught with our pants down last year on the Rios thing, and that's worked out well. It appears we got caught with our pants down again on Edwin Jackson, guess we'll have to hope this works out well too. Wait what? You didnt like the Rios deal last year? That was one of the greatest highway robberies ever. Sure Rios had been struggling but not every player can go their whole career with out a bad season or 2. Viciedo looks real good so far. And I REALLY hope it is true that Don Cooper WANTED Jackson here. Because if we only acquired him for the Nats, and got stuck w/ him, then that's pretty bad news. SOXOBAMA
Viciedo is going to be an All-Star for many years. Kudos goes out to Kenny for saying NO.

gatnom
QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:24 PM) Do you understand how waivers works? Most likely it will be for a PTBNL with prospects going later on. You realize everybody with a worse record gets the first shot at these waiver guys correct? As well as most of them being garbage of course.

Yep, I can understand KW not wanting to give up Viciedo (even though his inability to walk concerns me greatly). But it's pretty clear the only reason Adam Dunn is not on our team, and thus we still absolutely suck at DH and have a huge hole in our lineup, is lack of a farm system. Let this be known as an example of lack of minor league talent biting us in the ass.

Most likely it will be for a PTBNL with prospects going later on. LaRoche would have to make it through every NL team. Highly unlikely that would happen. And than after that, he'd have to get past quite a few AL teams before the Sox even had a shot. The only guys we'd have a shot at are guys like Manny and even that might be tough after the Dodgers went all in at the deadline going adding Lilly, Pods, Theriot, and Dotel. Dick Allen
QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:24 PM) Do you understand how waivers works? Most likely it will be for a PTBNL with prospects going later on. Do you not understand how it works? If any NL team claims LaRoche or any AL team with a worse record than the Sox claims Laroche or Scott, they cannot be White Sox. Its not like their contracts are so scary teams will pass. Rios made it through because he was owed $60 million, and for last season, how did it work out for the Sox?
CWSOX45
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:24 PM) I am happy. But our paper thin system really bit us in the ass. No one was going to trade for Dunn or Bautista. The asking price was ridiculous. Our farm system really isn't as weak as a lot of people perceive it to be. There is talent down there. Judging a team's farm system by Baseball Prospectus or Baseball America is a wash. Most of those guys don't even see the players they write about, they just regurgitate scouting reports from scouts that see guys pitch 6 innings or get 4 at bats and feel they are able to evaluate a player that is still developing in low or high a. My point is take what you read on the internet about team's farm systems with a grain of salt, because most of the time these so called "experts" don't have any idea what they're talking about. southsideirish71
QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:25 PM) Alex Rios. And how exactly did Alex Rios hit last year down the stretch. Sure last year was a fluke. But he wouldnt of been available for nothing if he was hitting normal. This is akin to hoping you find a great deal at the garage sale next week because you read about someone getting a 100k painting for 10 bucks. In reality the garage sale is just going to get you Aunt Myrtle's old dresses.

The only guys we'd have a shot at are guys like Manny and even that might be tough after the Dodgers went all in at the deadline going adding Lilly, Pods, Theriot, and Dotel. Like I said; the only guys that will be out there are at least 1 of the the three: overpaid/underperforming/injured, usually at least 2 of those 3 apply and they're dumped or dealt for high upside low level guys. I'm gonna have to give KW the benefit of the doubt that he actually liked EJax and didn't simply trade for him to give to the Nats without doing a 3-team deal. whitesoxfan101
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:25 PM) Wait what? You didnt like the Rios deal last year? That was one of the greatest highway robberies ever. Sure Rios had been struggling but not every player can go their whole career with out a bad season or 2. It may work out that way, but that was not the obvious good move for the Sox at the time you seem to think it was. Rios wasn't hitting at all, had a HUGE contract (still does), and had his effort questioned by many people. It was a huge risk, and it has worked out so far, but it was still a big risk. It certainly had the appearance of a team having it's bluff called on a waiver claim at the time too.
fathom
Let's face it, the best bet for Sox to have a productive DH is for Viciedo to become the everyday starter. However, I give that a 1% chance of happening.

iamshack
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:24 PM) I am happy. But our paper thin system really bit us in the ass. Where were all these other teams dealing away their great prospects for Adam Dunn, Luke Scott, Adam LaRoche, etc? The Rays and their stacked system didn't pick up Dunn. The Yankees and their over slot drafting philosophy didn't go get Dunn. No one traded for these guys, because the demands for them were insane. It's not a matter of our system. It's a matter of it being a stupid, short-sighted transaction. Edited July 31, 2010 by iamshack
