Andy Wilkins was drafted in the 5th RD of the 2010 MLB Draft, and was the first White Sox position player that was drafted in 2010. Wilkins was previously drafted out of High School by the Texas Rangers in the 25th round, but declined to go play for Arkansas.

The scouting reports indicate that Wilkins has very good power potential, and this is backed up by the college numbers, but the scouts also see holes in Wilkins' swing and suggest that he could have major problems hitting quality breaking pitches. Scouts also see him as a player who could take a while to adjust to hitting with a wood bat, although he put in a decent showing at the '08 Cape Cod League hitting .271/.356/.450 with Yarmouth-Dennis. Defensively he is at least average at 1B. General consensus had Wilkins listed as a 7th to 10th round prospect, making him a slight overdraft here in the 5th round.

At best, Andy Wilkins could become a prototypical high OBP slugger at the Major League level. At worst, Wilkins could flame out at the Double-A level if it turns out that he cannot hit the quality breaking pitches that he would likely face there. He profiles well statistically and having done some analysis into his game, I like the pick quite a bit. He's kind of a "wait and see" type prospect, but one who I feel may surprise.

Andy Wilkins is current playing in rookie ball for the White Sox in Great Falls. Playing a bit above his level, he is expected to do very well and it shouldn't take long for him to earn a promotion to Kannapolis.

Wilkins was selected to the 2010 Pioneer League All-Star team! :headbang

Season line:

.313/.402/.472/.872, 214 AB, 67 H, 14 2B, 1 3B, 6 HR, 40 RBI, 33 BB, 31 K, 7 SB, 2 CS.

His 14.8% K-rate is extremely good for a power-hitting 1B/3B, and his 13.4% BB-rate is just as impressive. For comparison sake, the Great Albert Pujols has a 12.7% K-Rate and a 13.6% BB-rate this season.

7 steals in 9 attempts ain't too shabby either for a the big lefty corner-infielder.

Ok...in the MLB. I'm excited about Wilkins, but lets not get ahead of ourselves.

Would the point have gotten across if I named some no-name rookie ball player who had similar rates?

It would have been as worthwhile as comparing a 21 year old in rookie ball to the best hitter of his generation in the Majors.

I'm not comparing the hitters, I am comparing the numbers. Wilkins HR swing looks like Ken Griffey Jr's. That doesn't mean I am comparing him to Griffey as a player, it means I am comparing their HR swings. I am comparing Wilkin's BB and K rates to those of Pujols so people get an idea of what is a good number to have. If I just said 13%, it doesn't give you an idea of how good or bad that number is, but if I show you a player with a number similar to that, if lets you know how the number compares.

Wilkins will be starting the 2011 season in Winston-Salem after putting together a very nice 53 games at Great Falls.

He had a .307/.396/.463/.859 slash line with 6 HR, 40 RBI, 14 2B, 7 SB, 31 K, and 33 BB in 53 games. 12% K rate is very good for a power hitter, and his 7 SB in 9 attempts is nice. I love that he can get on base at a good clip as well. I assume Wilkins will progress nicely through Winston-Salem as well, and make it to AA-Birmingham before the year ends, where he will really show us what he is made of. If Wilkins can show progression into AA as well, he might find himself on some top10 lists for the Sox, and give the Sox the really only good looking 1B prospect in our system (if Viciedo sticks it in the OF) since Brandon Allen.
