Lots of faith in Richmond with the game on the line and a lot of upperclassmen in the lineup. Overall, he has looked tenative IMO, but on that last play I think he showed what he is capable of.

Still can't tell if he walked on the play (left foot was definitely close), but it was a strong finish at least.

Illinois has been incredibly frustrating to watch. I feel like they're clearly more talented and shouldn't be dealing with a tie game right now except they're playing dumb as s***. It doesn't even matter what the refs are calling. If they lose, they have no one to blame but themselves.

This game has been incredibly frustrating to watch period. I don't know how you can take anything from it.

I just liked the confidence with him taking it to the hole, not looking for an outside shot or to pass the ball. That has been missing the last few years.

and that's the game. Illinois didn't deserve to win. horrible defense, bad offense at times. still a lot of work left. I wish they'd have the killer mentality, cuz the talent is clearly there.

Bill Cole hitting some bombs. I love Vitale for calling out Barnes' teams for having no court awareness.

As a self-proclaimed Illini hater, I have to ask the good Illinois fans on this site a question: wouldn't the Illini be better off if Davis wasn't on the team? Seems like he just slows down the offensive flow due to his mechanical nature, and I've always thought Griffey was a better fit for Weber's style.

It's disappointing to lose and not get to face Pitt, but can't complain about losing an OT game to a ranked team in November. MSU seems to do that all the time and still make the Final Four. Just don't lose to Maryland please.

They definitely still seem to be lacking that killer instinct, but hopefully Richmond can keep improving on what he did today and become a big time player.

I'm not a good IL fan, but I don't think they'd be better off without Davis. I think he's actually under-appreciated by most IL fans and the loss of his D and rebounding would offset any offensive gain. I think Griffey might be a better shooter and probably would take fewer bad shots, but I don't think he would board like Davis....

No. He rebounds too well and is a threat to hit the 15 footer. Illinois' problem is still the fact that physical bigs kill them. Tisdale, for as good as he is, can't match up with the true centers. I think Texas got some lucky inside turnaround shots to go tonight, but illinois still got beat up pretty badly on the boards (without looking at the stats, i'd be shocked if they were anywhere close in the rebounding battle). McCamey proved tonight he's going to be an NBA point guard, but he can't do it all by himself. Paul/Richardson do what they do, but when the entire 2nd half came down to foul shots it's tough to get into any kind of rhythm. Seriously the refs killed that game. The last 10 minutes every single trip was to the foul line.

Not a bad loss, but this was a big game to prove Illinois was a true contender. They have plenty of games to make this up, but it would have been great to get out of this weekend with a win against Texas and (worst case) a loss to Pitt.

I was under the impression that Davis is terrible on defense?

And I think the game also showed what Richmond will become. He's a freshman who doesn't want to take over....yet. But you can tell his basketball IQ is about 10 times anyone else on the team. In overtime Texas goes on a 6-0 run because Illinois rushes down and takes two awful shots. He's the one who grabs the ball, throws up his hand and says "lets slow this s*** down and get a good possession."

My hope is this team can gel into something good. I don't think they're anywhere close to their potential.

This is just my opinion and someone that knows basketball may blow it out of the water, but I think it depends on the matchup. From what I've seen I think Davis does a good job staying in front of his man when they face him up, but he sometimes gives up position inside to heavier guys. Davis has the height and ups to alter shots, so he gives you some of that. I think Griffey is a worse defensive player right now.

Man, Illinois is probably going to be frustrating to watch again this year if they play like they did tonight. So much talent but so many poor decisions. I didn't watch the entire game, but they are so soft down low on defense and on the boards. It's frustrating to see smaller guys grab boards at will against them. Richmond is going to be a hell of a player. He just looks like he know's he's awesome. McCamey was feeling it. Hopefully he strings games like that together. Richardson and Paul have so much potential but just make bad decisions. If they can get tougher, they can be a really really good team.

And I'm not a big Davis fan either. He just doesn't ever look like he's putting forth 100% effort. Should be much better than he is.

I think UI is very likely to underperform their talent level and have a disappointing year. Maybe even miss the tournament. But I don't think they played that poorly tonight. To me, Texas looked very athletic and played with effort on defense and hitting the boards. Rebounding was even for the game I believe, so I don't know that UI was soft on the boards. Really, if you want to look for one reason UI lost it's that they shot 38.4 percent...with Richardson and Paul especially needing to shoot better.

It's definitely possible, but I don't think it's very likely at all.

Well, Bruce Pearl has been suspended for the 1st 8 SEC games of the season for his violations. Figured I'd go ahead and throw it out since since all you Illinois fans would be all over this soon anyway.

Slap on the wrist, though I guess that's only the SEC's punishment. Flat out lying to the NCAA should be an automatic ban of some sort. It's not like he made a few more phone calls or something trivial.
