what about attempts to refute the 2nd amendment??...you think taking guns away from citizens and leaving them in the hands of the governemnt only wont bring about a police state???..have you seen happened inaustralia when they banned guns about 5 years ago???

The second amendment has been misinterpreted for decades, more like centuries.

It states that: A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

I'm sorry, but the Montana Freemen and the NRA are not f***ing militias.

Also, read up on US v Miller where the US Supreme Court ruled AGAINST Miller's right to bear arms. That case should be more than enough evidence to institute gun control, but of course we need our guns, so we can...um. Shoot them at the range. Yeah, sure. It's just so asinine how anyone can defend the 2nd amendment.

The Supreme Court ruled against Miller's right to bear a certain kind of sawed off shotgun, not strictly to bear arms. The Court also said in its ruling and I quote directly "The signification attributed to the term Militia appears from the debates of the convention, the history and legislation of Colonies and States, and the writings of approved commentators. These show plainly enough that the Militia comprised ALL males physically capable of acting in concert for the common defense." Capitals in "all" are mine, otherwise this is word for word in the decree.

Interesting article. And thanks for bringing some conversation to the thread. The way people jump all over each other for politics drives me nuts.

TEH FUNNEH!!!

Then you trash the parts of the Constitution that you either disagree with (electoral college anyone?) or refute or disprove your argument. Either you accept the Constitution as a whole or you don't accept it at all Apu..... you Rebel!

Oh, this is just way too easy. If you've EVER looked at the Constitution, some parts were taken out. Also, there are these things called Amendments to the Constitution. So, I guess all of the people who did the amendments were rebels, too?

Broadening your horizions? You're as close minded as you can get, shut up before you make yourself look like any more of an ass.

No s*** Sherlock. Maybe I have to S-P-E-L-L everything out for you since you obviously had no f***ing clue what I was talking about. In a nutshell, if you (or Apu in this case) were going to use the Constitution to back up your argument, my point was you can't pick and choose the sections you like to back up your argument and, conversely, you can't write off the sections you disagree with or don't give credence to your argument. It had nothing to do with Amendments dips***!

And how the f*** do you know I'm close minded dickhead? You'd be surprised just how liberal I am but, then again, you just arbitrarily label people with the "ass" moniker if they disagree with you.

Don't blame me..... I'm not the one who made this conversation personal when someone called me an "ass."

Since you seem to be so anti-American in the garbage you post, why not come right out and defend Saddam as a patriot? While your at it, defend Hitler too.

See Constitution, freedom of speech. Also, if you were in Germany during the 1930's, I would bet my entire f***ing house that you would of went along kindly to Hitler. What would you do, keep suffering through a HUGE depression because of the Allies and the Treaty of Versailles, or would you go along with someone who could strengthen your country? Of course, this is assuming you don't know about the Holocaust.

So, like the Iraq situation, the Allies and the treaties agreed upon after WWI were to blame for WWII? I agree with you in as much as they were the impetus for the rise of Hitler. But, it appears, you are again displacing blame from Hitler and the German Axis and blaming the Allies. And the comment about me not knowing about the Holocaust is so f***ing stupid that this is the only sentence I will type about it. Asking me this stupid f***ing question when I knew personally a person held in a Nazi Concentration Camp. The f***ing nerve of you.....

good catch on the definition of the term "militia"..what the gun control nuts refuse to accept is that the term militia at that time meant any american willing to rise up against any enemy...foriegn or domestic...it was a safegaurd put in the constitution to help not only protect the nation from foreign enemies but also in case someday our governemnt failed to follow the constitution and decided to run amuck over the american people...

has anyone studied what has gone on in australia since they came and took everyone's guns away??...robbery has increased over 50%..and violent crimes such as rape and assault have also significantly increased..i havent heard much about it lately but i know there was a huge uprising from citizens there to have their gun rights restored...

sometimes people just cant leave well enough alone

Me too. I love a good debate and it is possible to do it without all the vicious insults. I also understand that when you are young you think you "know" everything. I've tried to make my points without raking the college kids over the coals. The lack of historical knowledge is depressing as hell, one of the reasons I decided not to try to teach after getting a degree and certificate as an adult. I said it before in another thread, this generation of American kids is the most sloppily and badly educated in the history of the nation. Before I get slammed for saying this, I know from where I speak, lots of educational professionals will tell you the same thing and it is NOT the kids fault. Besides, if you want to do anything right you often have to do it yourself.

I agree. The educational system in the US blows major league hardcore ass. In grade school I was taught that Columbus was a wonderful, benevolent man who helped the Natives he found.

Then, I read some of his memoirs and the guy was an absolute asshole to these people! Massacres, his blatant ethnocentrism, killing, exploiting...

If the textbooks and the educational system stopped painting the melodramatic picture of everything and stopped making it look like all our historical figures were perfect men, maybe kids would have a better zest for wanting to learn history.

I know it was until I started reading OUTSIDE of the textbook that I really got interested in history. As it stands, I am going for a major in history with my minor being secondary education.

f***, there was recently a CNN article that showed over 50% of kids do not know where Afghanistan or Iraq are on a map...and get this...12% don't know where Canada is!

How f***ed are we as a culture that our news is about celebrity shoplifting, the end of a TV show, the newest reality dumbf*** show out there instead of the real pressing social issues of our time?

I have been told by my relatives and others whom I have asked about the graphic coverage of the Vietnam "police action" and they said that the media wasn't really afraid to tackle issues like that. Now our media kisses so much ass, it's not even funny.

We pay teachers incredibly low salaries, for the most part parents don't help in the discipline dept (i.e. everything that happens in the school can't be their kid's fault...the teacher must be targeting them for misbehavior), et al. and we wonder why our teaching system is so s***ty?

With the swill we make our children swallow about blind patriotism to a bunch of dead perfect men they can't even grasp a feeling for...we're asking for kids to not give a s*** about school, especially history!
