If Ankiel could stay healthy, would he be the cheap answer for DH?

You're basically counting on a big comeback from a guy who might well no longer be on the magic juice. Thanks to 4 HR in his first 90 at bats, he was slightly above average with the Royals, and he's been well below average since heading to the Braves. He's never gotten more than 450 PA's in a season. His combined OPS over the last 2 years is .681. He'll be 31 years old next year.

That's a "scraping the bottom of the barrel" kind of move to me. If you want to keep Jones and make them a full time platoon DH situation...it might be plausible...but there's a real solid chance that he doesn't give you any more than Kotsay over a full season.

I'm not sure if I'm even joking, but can someone list the 2001 All-star roster? Probably a better idea of the type of player KW/Ozzie will target.

Actually, Garcia and Manny were the only 2 players from the 2001 ASG that played for the Sox since 2001

I think you are probably referring to the guys who were former allstars, then faded and then targeted by Kenny, guys like Vizquel, Jones and Putz

Ankiel was playing for the Royals Triple A team for god sake

So was Alex Gordon.

Anyway...that doesn't really tell you anything...he was playing there mostly on a rehab stint, and he performed well enough there that it got him a callup and eventually helped interest the Braves in a trade.

anyhow, don't want him anywhere near the Sox

Like you said, he was Mark Kotsay on juice before, now he's Mark Kotsay without the juice, and with the fragility of Wood/Prior

There's a couple of combinations. Honestly, it depends on what the Sox do with Konerko and for how much. I'd personally love for Beltre to come here, sign Uribe as a backup INF, go after VMart, but if it doesn't work out, go for Olivo and resign Manny and Andruw. That's not possible here with Konerko on a large contract. There's tons of different ways the Sox can go this offseason.

I agree that much of what happens over the off-season will hinge on Konerko. I would hope he's re-signed, and $8-$12 million a year seems likely for him. If one of Manny or Andruw is brought back, I'd have to go for Jones. He'd cost less, and I think he has more power nowadays. VMart would be great, but I wouldn't be surprised to see AJ behind the plate for at least one more year.

That is the thing that kills me and it seems it happens alot when regular posters try to "evaluate" prospects. A prospect has one bad year after mashing every level he was at, only to have his swing changed in the off-season and his mind mentally f***ed because of mechanics and now he's horrid? Tyler Flowers put up a .220/.334/.434/.768 line in his worst year in the minors at AAA (which was his first full year after putting up .286/.364/.438/.803 in 105 ABs last year). Now I'm not saying he'll pan out (since that does happen as well.. prospects are hit or miss) but a guy who will be making the minimum next season and will probably put up a better OBP than A.J. without even trying (and has more offensive "potential", though I hate that word) I would like to at least see what he can do next season, and hope Greg Walker doesn't try to continue to fix what ain't broke. (or.. maybe wasn't broke prior) A.J. is hitting .268/.300/.383/.682, 82 OPS+ this year. Flowers will never match A.J. in average, but I'm sure he can put up a .300 OBP (and a higher OPS) at the major league level making peanuts, especially if the sox can address the other areas that are much more important (a hitting DH/RF/1B [whatever happens to Konerko and/or Quentin, 3B if they don't like what they see in Morel, bullpen, LF [ya thats just me talking since I do not like Pierre] etc..) Now if the sox have something else planned in the off-season (FA signing/trade lined up for a solid catcher) fine, but I'm one of the few that prefers we go in a different direction as far as the catchers position (unless we might have another DH-like situation, then you bring A.J. back or if we've upgraded at DH/possibly 1B if PK is gone, 3B, possibly LF/RF substantially, than sure, A.J. wouldn't kill you)

You don't consider the fact that KW was willing to deal Tyler for two months of Adam Dunn alarming?

Like I said... if your getting a bat next season (upgrading at DH or 1B if PK leaves, 3B, etc..) you do it without hesitation and bring back A.J. who won't kill you. I'm sure any of us would have done the same thing. (especially netting 2 draft picks out of it) I mean come on.. it's Adam Dunn. But for a franchise who has been crying poor, despite actually spending, I would assume they would be playing more guys at the minimum, especially having a 50+ million dollar rotation locked up.

Not if I thought Flowers was a legitimate prospect. He's been trash ever since he left Bham for Charlotte. And it's not like we're talking about a 20/21 year-old that was rushed to AAA. I'm not saying he's flat done as a prospect. But many prospect 'experts' have soured on him quite a bit. And even when he was mashing his defense has always been a concern. He'll be 25 before the either baseball season starts next year and there's just too many questions for me to feel good about him even in a part-time role.

I wonder what the Sox will do about the outfield. Pierre and Rios will almost for sure be back, but RF is the question mark. I don't want to see Quentin struggling out there again, and Jones can't play every day. And as far as I know, we don't have a prospect ready to step in.
