Of the Sox managers over the past 30 years, we're discussing the two best. Do you want old and experienced, or still rough around the edges? I don't believe Ozzie is built for the long haul. No way he's still managing in 25 years. I'd have to see who else is mentioned, but I'd like to see Tony on the short list.

In terms of "Built for the Long Haul"...I'd say there's more of a chance that Ozzie is managing in 25 years than LaRussa.

Time off is overrated.

By spring training, he'll be raring to go.

It's a pretty good gig if one can handle all the second guessing. And the bucks the managers get paid, it's probably pretty easy to handle second guessing.

I bet Piniella will get bored as well unless he has a cushy TV gig.

I would think the job of a major league manager could be quite stressful. A manager like LaRussa and even Ozzie probably don't care that much about the second guessing of the fans. They can't really, and be successful. I agree that Pinella might get bored. He's a volatile guy, and all he's really known for a long time is managing...and he's been pretty good at it. You never know, he might resurface somewhere with another team.

I would imagine that at some point during a season, most managers think about quitting, retiring, etc. Especially guys who have been around for a long time, like LaRussa and Leyland. And some years when they say they are pondering it and leave the mdia and fans to guess, maybe they actually mean it. I would probably be very difficult to make that decision to retire. Maybe they actually need those few weeks to think about it, or maybe it is a tactic for more cash. As far as Leyland, though, for as good as a manager he is, he can smoke all he wants.

Yes he can smoke all he wants, but he's gonna pay the piper for all that smoking someday. Unless he's very very lucky and one of those freakish guys that can smoke until he's 100 and have it not affect him.
