Why not? At least according to fangraphs version of WAR...he's been a $12-$20 million pitcher in WAR every year except 2006

I don't see it there anymore. I don't think if Mark were on the open market today, our fans would be clamoring for us to spend $14 million on him as a free agent who wasn't already with the Sox. That tells me everything right there.

But would Mets, Dodger, Cards, Cubs etc want him on the team?

Not to sure in what the Mets could offer for MB, but I could see them being interested. I could also see them taking on Linebrink and half his contract for next year.

Do they have $14 million next year? I know the Dodgers and Cubs don't for sure.

Let's put it this way...if there was a team that had $20 million to spend and need of a reliable, near the top of the rotation 200+ innings, they'd be crazy if they didn't want MB.

They might not want to give up a top 5 prospect at the same time to do it...but if it was just the money...absolutely. How much did the Braves give up 2 years ago for Javy Vazquez, who makes $11.5 million, and then how much did the Yankees give up last year for Javy Vazquez, who makes $11.5 million? You're telling me that if you had the choice between giving up $14 million for MB and $11.5 million for Javy Vazquez...you'd take Javy?

That's tough. Javy clearly has the better stuff and has a good track record of success in the NL. MB has been more consistent and has proven he doesnt s*** himself in pressure situations but it's not as cut and dry as you make it seem. $14M for a pitcher like MB is a lot.

If I go to fangraphs and say "what has been their career total worth in terms of WAR when translated to dollars", Vazquez has been worth $135, MB56 $133. They started counting those in the same year, so for the most part, they've been roughly similar in terms of dollar value over the period that they count that for.

Not to mention that for the long term, Vazquez is 3 years older. And the postseason stuff that we're not counting. And the fact that Mark! is a lefty. And the fact that there's no such thing as UZR for a pitcher yet.

I've said it since Spring Training, but he's not coming back next year. I must have been the only person who saw the television clip from Arizona where he said it's time to move on after this season. He'll likely go to either Boston or the Dodgers/Angels.

This is fishy to me, if he indeed gets more money to come back but goes elsewhere, well it means he doesn't really want to be here anymore.

Sad.

He pretty much said he's unsure but I take he wants to give FA a try?

Where would he play on those teams?

I think he's done, too. He's a classy guy but the spats between ozzie and kw have to wear on a guy like that.

Konerko said Sox have to make improvements on and off the field to catch the Twins. BTW, another big reason that not bringing back Thome has hurt us is that if Thome was still here, I'm pretty sure Konerko would stay around also.

He's 100% right there. He's probably quite upset with the way this season has gone, and I wouldn't blame him.

Paulie lives in Arizona so I highly doubt he'll go play for any team that has its spring training in Florida. Which means Boston probably is out of the equation (unless they are the team that offers by far the most money).

I want to know what the off the field adjustments are that Paulie is talking about? Kenny? Scouting? Certain players? Ozzie? Kenny/Ozzie disputes?

Beltre leaves, Youk to 3rd. There's a lot of talk Dodgers might be interested in him, as Loney is likely going to be dealt.

Certain players I truly believe. I still thought it was telling when Konerko's wife said during a broadcast this year that Konerko and Thome still hang out whenever they can.

Paulie also grew up in Rhode Island, though for how long since he went to high school in Arizona. So he could view Boston as a home coming. Perhaps he still has family there. Whitepage searching Konerko's in Rhode Island versus Arizona, I am pretty sure I stumbled upon the address of Konerko's Arizona home. However, I won't post for obvious reasons.

Yup, I get the feeling getting rid of Jim, didn't sit well with Paulie.

We got rid of his two best friends in Thome and Dye, and we've already made it known that another of his close friends, Kotsay, likely won't be coming back. I can't really blame Konerko, as maybe he wants a new challenge? He'd be an absolute monster in Boston. As much as I love Konerko and would hate to see him gone, if the money they were going to use for him goes to fill a few holes, it might work better for the team.

If we weren't choking away the division year after to year to the Twins, I think the ancillary stuff wouldn't matter as much. I think about patented White Sox second half fade and I become frustrated. I can't even imagine what Konerko feels when experiencing it damn near every season.
