Semantics, shmantics.

Don't forget the fix being in for Chicago getting the #1 pick ahead of Miami :crying

Quit crying, it was the Heat who got everything this off-season.

The probability of tampering during that processes and the probability of that draft being fixed are about equal.

It would be semantics if someone jokingly argued that it was the Hornets pick and that the Lakers used the Hornets pick.

But J4L was trying to act like the Hornets actually made the pick and then Lakers tried to trade for Kobe after.

The fact is that the Lakers traded for the pick before the draft, so therefore it was entirely the Lakers decision to take Kobe. To say anything else is patently false and completely misconstrues the fact that the Lakers (like the other teams I mentioned) got their superstar through the draft.

Just because the majority of my basketball posting comes in the NCAA thread, doesnt mean I dont know about the NBA. I can still remember the night that Wade was drafted in front of the Bulls and we took Hinrich.

I dont think Ill ever get over it.

huh? Even the players were quoted saying how much they loved it.

I don't care what the players think, I just don't personally like the way the guy sings. No offense to him or anyone that likes it. Just not pleasing to my ears.

I'm not sure I'd even say that.

If I hire you as an NBA Gm tomorrow to take over, let's say, the Raptors. Your job is to take that team and turn it into a winning team within 5 years. Let's also say that you fail to land the next Derrick Rose. You do everything right. You get rid of your big contracts, you try for the lottery every year, but when you win the lottery you wind up with Bargnani.

After 3 years of that, the owner and fans have become impatient with you because you're supposed to be winning, but you can't win because you can't land Lebron James as a FA even though you had the cap space, and you can't land Derrick Rose in the draft. What do you do?

You have 2 options. Keep doing what you're doing, stay under the cap, maybe even have to pay a bonus to your players because you're under the minimum, and hope to finally land the guy you couldn't land the last few years.

Or, 2., try to make the playoffs one of these years. To do that, you take the cap space you have, and you spend it on what's there, whether it's worth what you pay or not.

If you do nothing, you're fired in 2 years, so why not gamble? Sometimes the gamble pays off. Take a look at Memphis. They dumped money on Rudy Gay that I thought was crazy, and they took on Zach Randolph's contract which was absolutely nuts of them to do, and they made a pretty good run this year and added probably years to the life of their GM.

The problem is that the incentives in the NBA's current system are broken. You can't win as a small team doing everything right unless you happen to land Rose in the draft or unless you happen to be a big enough party/endorsement market that Lebron wants to come party on your shores. It's a fundamentally broken system.

Or you do get lucky, find a LeBron in the draft, and he leaves.

True, I'm just imagining in your cap and trade model the maloofs working a 10 million dollar salary and pocketing $40 million.

Do you remember when the Maloofs spent tons of money on there franchise? Cause they did when they had a really good team. I think they will again too.

That was also when they had enormous revenue coming in from one of the hottest casinos on the strip. Those days have sorta vanished.

Agreed, but they'll spend again. Technically, the Palms was off the strip (or did they own another casino as well)?

True, they're just across the highway.

I just remember the Maloofs flying coach all throughout 2008/2009 and I find it hard to believe they have the $ to spend on that franchise. I don't think their casino revenues have picked up much since them, I think the packed houses would have to come first.

I agree. They don't have other revenue to generate from outside business so they will need the Kings to do well. But that place was rocking and that franchise was successful not so long ago. Pretty sad how quickly they've fallen apart. But I do think the Maloofs should get some credit for being real great owners when they had funds.

I think there hotel has improved a bit as the Vegas economy and travel industry has picked up, but that area is so tough, with constant competition and new hotels. For pete sakes, next weekend, which is a huge travel weekend, I'm staying at a suite in the Venetian for $100 per night. I still have no idea how I pulled that kind of deal. Those rooms should be going for a few hundred a night on a holiday weekend.

They built another tower at the palms for some reason. There are simply too many new hotels to go around especially with the city center now open with 4 new hotels. I stayed at the Palazzo for less than 200 a few weeks ago.

There are simply too many days off in between games. Guys are making trades for Dwight with a team that is up 1-0 in the Eastern Conference Finals, people are talking draft picks, now a completely random Vegas convo.

Tomorrow night can't get here quickly enough! :lolhitting

I'd venture to guess that there have been more posts in this thread today than most White Sox gamethreads.

Palazzo is nice, but I haven't stayed there before. Is Palazzo pretty much all suites like Venetian? I assume the rooms are similar, much like how the Wynn/Encore are similar.

Yeah, its the All-suites version of the Venetian, slightly larger rooms with the sunken living room and pull out couch. It has a smaller casino.

The next ST gathering should be in Vegas, following the Bulls and Sox winning championships. Steve might just die at Tao Beach or Rehab.

Shack will put us all up on his living room floor. Then we can hang with his stripper neighbor

they were all being invested in just prior to the drop in the economy and many were started. Center Strip went from having 3 shifts a day to 1 really quickly. It's insane the deals you can get for hotels out there. There was a big project planned for the space between Hard Rock and the strip, and I think it got to the point of closing up all the apartments in that area, then money dried up
