Doors in sports are few and far between. Do you have any idea what the % chance is that if you are an excellent employee, it could turn into a full time gig at some point? It is a term internship?

What hours would you work? Any way you could do something part time to have some money? How much would your parents help? Do you know anyone that may know anyone in St. Louis you could kind of live with for cheap? Maybe even another employee? That's been done before.

Finances may make this impossible for you, but if it's not impossible, don't close the door on it.

It could turn into an extended internship where I work in marketing during the season if I do a good job. I don't know if it is paid though. The hours worked are 8:30-5:30, Monday thru Friday with some weekend hours. They said that they are flexible in terms of letting people go to part-time jobs whether it is retail or serving if they need to. There might be a chance that I could land a place with a relative of a friend I know or a friend of my sister's that might house me for cheap. I'm just preparing to go into this endeavor without having much of a bank account even if I have graduation money.

1. You realistically have a very small window in your life to take this kind of job, and right now you're in it. As others have said, these chances just don't come around very often.

2. You are somehow who is all over the place in terms of what you want to do, but I know you have always wanted to work in sports. This opportunity will be a great way for you to get a better idea if working in sports is really for you. There are tons of people, including some on this site, that have taken jobs in sports similar to this one with the intention of working in sports for their entire life, and realize they hate it. Now is your time to figure this out.

That's how I pictured this opportunity. I'm young, debt-free and without obligations. I should do it just because it is good experience and I would be working with a professional sports team. And yes, I need to figure out if this is truly an avenue for me to take as far as working in this as a career. Otherwise I think it is going to be best to work in something I can get a job in that aligns well with my skills and keeps me in Chicago.

I'm excited how active this thread is for everyone. Seems soxtalk is in for brighter times.

Yep. The winds of change are blowing!

Thanks to those who gave me their advice on my situation too. My interview is tomorrow at 10am and I am going to see how it goes. I hope to see if they can let me take all the info and think it over for a couple of days. This is really why I wanted to wait until Friday but everyone was telling me that Friday is a bad day to interview, plus they said it would look as though I wasn't eager enough.

Yep, time to just get hired so I can stop it with the mind games.

Ok people, here's my scenario...

I had a phone screen interview with Company A on Monday that I thought went very well. The recruiter and I really hit it off, and she is going to get back to me later this week after discussing me to the local hiring manager to let me know if they want me to come in for an in-person interview next week.

Here's my problem. I have an in-person interview on Thursday this week with Company B. And I think based on a conversation that I already had with the hiring manager and HR that there is a good chance I will be getting a job offer.

I would really like to interview with the Company A too though, but I don't yet know if that will even happen. If it does, it could mean more money and possibly a better position than Company B.

What do you do in this situation? Is there really some way I could get Company B to give me time to think it over while I go and interview with Company A? Mind you, I have been out of work since April last year, so I really don't need to be turning down job offers right now but of course, I want to give myself the best opportunity. I also don't think it would be very wise to tell Company B that I also have an interview planned with Company A.

Thoughts?

My fiancee had a similar situation a couple years ago. She had completed her 3rd interview with Company A. She had had 2 interviews with Company B. On a Thursday, Company A offered her a job. But, she really wanted to work for Company B if they were going to offer. Once she had the offer from Company A, she called Company B and told them that she has an offer from Company A and said that she had to let Company A know by Monday. She also told Company B that she completely understands if they are not ready to make a decision yet, but she just wanted them to be aware of the situation. She wasn't pushy about anything, but she was up front and honest with them, told them she would still love to pursue an opportunity with them if they were willing, etc.

Monday came and she had to let Company A know something, and really, she wasn't going to turn down Company A if she didn't know one way or the other from Company B. Well Company B called her and offered her a job.

She never told Company A that she was interviewing with another company, but had no problem telling Company B the situation.

I think she played it about as well as she could. Granted it worked out well, but going in, the actions seemed to make the most sense and didn't hurt anyone's feelings or come off in bad way to either company.

That sounds cool and I am glad it worked out for her. Only difference here is that I have not interviewed with either yet and am waiting to see if I even am offered an interview by the other company. I think the only thing I can realistically do, if I get an offer tomorrow, is call the other company and tell them I got a job offer and let them decide from there what they want to do. If I only have 24 hours to decide though, there probably won't be a lot they can do. I am sure they would want me to come in and interview in person before making any kind of offer and unless they cram me in last minute for the next morning, I will be out of luck with that one.

If you are interviewing for the first time on Thursday, do you think they have other interviews possibly lined up for next week? Or would bring you in for another one, perhaps? It would be good for you, but tough to predict, that they would give you an offer tomorrow or Friday after a Thursday interview I would think. Maybe that could help buy you some time, or at least get further with the other company.

That's the thing about all of this. I don't know if they have other candidates they are interviewing or not, and the reason I say that is that I used to work for the same company as a few people already working there (it's the same industry as I've been in the past 12+ years). So really they already know me, for the most part. They have made it seem like all I need to do is go in there and talk to them. I don't know; I could be wrong but that is the vibe I am getting.

One trick you could always try is, if they ask you to make a decision in 24 hours...turn it around and ask for a 5% salary bump or something like that and say you'll agree right then if they do that for you.

Just an update.

My interview today went great. The job sounds like it will be fantastic and I will be getting a job offer maybe tomorrow or early next week. I will be able to meet with the other company if needed, but man, I don't know if they can top this.

Anyway thanks everyone for your input. It was very helpful. :headbang

Applied for a job that I thought I was completely unqualified for but now have a phone interview since it is out of state. Yikes. I think I'm a tad nervous. Yup, yup I am.

No need to be nervous. There are some good phone interviewing tips earlier in this thread.

Know your resume back and forth. Pick out 2 or 3 experiences at your current work that you could explain in great detail and explain how you added value in those situations.

Be confident. They like what they saw on your resume.

That's always good to do. Make sure to come up with some questions to ask them but don't ask questions about benefits in your first interview.

But you never told us how things played out with Company A and Company B?
