Congrats, Russ! :headbang I know it's a heck of a feeling to get that out of the way.

Yea man, it's great knowing that you don't have to go out and interview elsewhere, and I can just enjoy life and focus on classes.

Thanks guys! It just feels great to see that after 25 weeks of interning here (with a few more before school) that I still love working here, especially for the management above me, and that they liked me enough to give me such an offer.

Congrats Russ!!!! Awesome accomplishment.

  • 2 weeks later...

The internship concluded last Saturday as I was able to work a Rams/Colts pre-season game, go on the field, help out at half-time and sell Kids Club memberships. Overall, it was a pretty cool experience and it gives me something to talk about in an interview.

I have sent out at least 30 applications to internships in PR and have heard back from Israel Idonijae's non-profit organization and Wilks Communications in Chicago and am scheduling calls with them next week. Crain's had a social media coordinator internship position that was already filled and discovered that Comcast Sportsnet's interns need to be in college so I can't intern there. About the only part-time jobs available are at Family Video, which I will probably end up interviewing for since other part-time gigs haven't called me back.

Perhaps I need to broaden the scope a bit to try and get a full-time job, but it is tough when you can't separate spam from good on Monster, Careerbuilder and indeed. Its tough when very few organizations have the cash to invest in new graduates, but that is just the reality of today's economy. So I figured that a part-time job parted with a part-time internship would be better for me than doing a full-time job that won't help my career in the long run.

I know this is pretty much the opposite of what this thread is about but ..... I JUST QUIT MY JOB. Boom, so happy about it. I was accepted into grad school a short time ago (Northeastern Univ. in Boston). Sooo excited to get out of Missouri and up to Boston. This makes the 10th time I've moved in the last 2 years (political campaigns) but this one should be a long-term move. I couldn't be more excited about this opportunity. Plus the campus is like 5 blocks from Fenway so I can enjoy some baseball while I'm at it.

Congrats. And even if this is the opposite of getting a job, it is about continuing your career path so I think it pertains just fine. You'll be looking for a job again soon enough.

This should be an ulcer inducing week for me as I await the results of this opportunity out west. The Dell gig in Round Rock didn't pan out. Oh well. This other opportunity would be a dream job for me. I'm hoping the recommendation from a Deloitte partner will put me over the top.

I am in a unique position at the moment. Seeing as though it is near impossible to get a full-time marketing coordinator or PR specialist position right now, I have decided to work two part-time internships (as part-time jobs are a b**** to get as well).

Last week I interviewed with Perpetual Fitness Motion Corporation (Chicago) and Wilks Communications (Oak Park). Received offers from both places but Wilks Communications has longer hours (35 as opposed to 20) and is paid ($10/hour). On Friday I got an email from the Big Ten Network for a paid internship opportunity and CouponTrade also wants to interview me after receiving a writing sample and my resume.

The problem isn't that I have these opportunities, but it is the timing in which they want someone to come work for them. I want to work at least 50 hours a week and receive some income but I have to respond by the end of the week to Wilks/PFMC. [Company removed] and BTN probably won't have a decision made by the end of the week. Should I see if either of the organizations I interviewed with already would extend offers to the following Monday? It is likely that I'll take the Wilks Communications offer and take one of the unpaid internships. Seems like a damned if I do, damned if I don't situation I have because of the timing that the offers were extended.

Have a 3rd and hopefully final interview today over the phone. One question I have is should I sent out a lengthy thank you email afterward? This is the 3rd time I'm interviewing with this person. Maybe a simple "it was nice talking earlier today...have a great holiday weekend" type email would be sufficient at this point. Listing why I'm their perfect candidate for the 3rd time seems like overkill.

Any thoughts?

I'd go with the short thank you. It is thoughtful without being pushy.

WOW i just looked at my spreadsheet I keep of all the jobs I've applied for. So far 73 job applications... 3 interviews (all within 2 weeks of each other). I dont know what the average ratio of applications:interviews is, but that is kind of depressing to me.

Mine is 12 out of 70 dating back to early last year. (Disclaimer: Several of the 12 were initial phone screening interviews that didn't result in a face-to-face)

I sent out hundreds of resumes, and got about half a dozen different interviews over a couple year time period. That sounds pretty normal honestly.

I applied for 32 internships, sent out 2 letters and applied for 8 part-time jobs. My part-time search yielded 1 part-time job that went poorly (manager wasn't even ready for me to come and interview), another hiring manager didn't call me back and plenty others didn't say anything. I am on all of the major websites for full-time positions but it would be hard to get up to do something when that isn't what I want to do.

So since I am covered on insurance, I figured I would take two of the four internships that got back to me (one paid, one unpaid) and work for [Company removed] and Wilks PR doing PR/Social Media/Marketing related work. Then I'll build up my resume and try and get a full-time position either at these small companies or get in somewhere else since they can't argue that I have the experience.

I start the two internships on Tuesday and Wednesday, totalling around 50 hours a week of work - but I am not complaining, I am thrilled!

I absolutely hate paying student loans when my degree hasn't got me a job in the 15 months since graduating. Out of money as well. This f***ing blows. Even when I apply for s***ty retail and restaurant jobs they hire someone else because I'm overqualified.

It may be too late, but you might be able to find a paid internship at this point on indeed.com. I knew I wasn't going to get a full-time position without relevant experience so that's why I chose to just hit the internships hard. Search paid internships in your area or Chicago and see what comes up. It wouldn't hurt.
