I think you guys are being a bit harsh...if you can't even pay your employees the s***ty wage you're paying them on time, then yes, when you get a bit of operating cash, you should probably make up for it in some small way.

The issue with him being paid on time and him expecting a raise because his company made money are completely separate in my mind. If the company is late on payroll, I'm looking for another job, not wondering why I didn't make incentive because the company made money. Its a startup company, there is an inherent risk in working there. s*** could hit the fan and then you have no job. It happened to me, I got laid off in november 05. The only difference is I had to tell my wife and child I had no job.

He threw the generation Y comment out there, which is pretty ridiculous considering the state of the economy and the unemployment issues in the country.

I worked for 8 months for a startup and never made a dollar from them.

I thought he was saying he would leave because of that, even if they were to give him a pay raise...

And I get the economy and you should be happy you have a job and all, but a lot of those unemployed people are turning down the jobs like Ross has, so I'm not feeling too bad for them. Additionally, just because the job market blows doesn't give any company the right to mistreat their employees. The employers should be working to improve the economy and job market, not take advantage of it.

wow, that sucks. so you lasted 8 months without a pay check?

most start-ups aren't worth the time to work at. it's just better to start your own company.

I had a review three months after I was hired and was told I would be getting a raise then. It didn't happen then and the CEO said it would be happening "soon." The wage I make for the work I do is not fair - even the woman I interned for at the agency said I should be making plenty more and she owns her own business.

This has nothing to do with an incentive other than them holding true to their word, especially since many people are barely making a living as I have mentioned while others are moving up. It's hard for a customer service rep or person in my "department" (it's only me) to move up when you aren't making them any money like the sales reps are. This company just fired an expecting father and reduced the hours of a senior writer.

I am glad to be employed but as I have said before, I am seeking more fulfillment and something more stable (and where I can get paid instead of payment being deferred). That's why I am saying even with funding, I am thinking it's time to move on elsewhere since I don't see my job being my career. The generation Y comment was not thought out well. I don't believe I am entitled to anything, but I do feel confident I could go elsewhere and get a job with a salary and benefits. Hopefully this clarifies things a bit.

Yes it does, and I take back what I said on that clarification at least from my standpoint. But listen, you can't ever expect anyone to do anything they say. I've been supposed to get promoted for 2 years. And I just got a new boss. Guess what that means? No promotion. Management doesn't EVER owe you anything. But you do deserve a paycheck, of course you do. Just don't expect any more then that.

There's a disconnect here. If management explicitly promise a raise or more compensation/benefits, etc., in return for some performance, then they DO owe him that. Now, whether the worker should legitimately expect that promise to be fulfilled is something different (and in a practical sense, more important), but that doesn't change whether it's owed.

I think he's alluding more to vague oral promises than anything explicit...

Fair point. I couldn't tell from Ross's explanation which it was, so I thought I'd specifically lay out what I meant.

I'm not sure either...I'm just guessing as to what Kap means...

No you're right. Now, if it's said you work on X and we'll pay you Y, then yes, that's an agreement... but you better have it in writing.

Anyone out there ever faced the possibility of relocating somewhere all by yourself? I've been applying to jobs all over the country, and the prospect of moving to a town in Wyoming or something is kind of intimidating.

Sort of. Moved from Chicago to Seattle last fall but it was with my wife and baby. We really didn't know anyone out here though and it's not a quick drive to go back and visit family and friends.

Yep.

Just take things one step at a time, and think of it as a chance to reinvent yourself..it's actually quite exciting if you think about it that way.

I moved to upstate NY for school alone. We just moved back to Wisconsin. People are people everywhere but the way of live changes. I find it fun.

I'm not so much worried about the people as I'm very outgoing. The main concern is just being on my own, far away from help (family) without being at school. I'm incredibly excited with the potential options I have in front of me, they're just really huge decisions. I guess this is what I signed up for in being a broadcaster.

I never have, but we ran into a couple who had just moved from the east coast last weekend. We gave them our facebooks so that they could have someone to ask about places and things in the area. Talk to as many people as you can!

My employer wants me to stay later at the office, but still hasn't paid me for the last time I worked overtime. I just said no yesterday since I didn't know how long the trains ran. And I'm also not looking for a good reference from either of the co-founders...I have two people there that can vouch for me.

On the bright side a recruiter at a company wants to interview me to be an SEO copywriter and I applied for two higher education jobs the other day. So there's some traction in my job search!

You are really not as far away as you might think...it would have been much more difficult for me 20-30 years ago, I'm sure...but with the internet and cell phones...you are always very close to still communicating with friends and family. Also, keeping up with your favorite sports teams gives you a sense of home, as well.

Anyone ever have two of their superiors sort of battling it out against one another and in the process making decisions meant to harm each other and clearly not in the best interests of the company?

Yeah, like every day.
