G&T
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 16, 2012 -> 09:34 AM) Sorry to hear that, G&T...so they started checking your references, and then just hired someone else before they even got to talk to your friend? Basically yes. He was actually my most important reference for this job (former boss in similar work) so I couldn't replace him. They honestly told me they would call references for the top 1 or 2 candidates, so I knew a reference check wasn't a guarantee. I also knew they were moving very quickly and any delay could cost me. It's possible that it made no difference. I might have been the back up regardless. But it's tough to hear they went with someone with more experience when they didn't talk to my best reference that could vouch for my experience. I did have 2 other glowing references. It was just a job, not a great career move or anything. In fact, it was more of a backup. I have 2 weeks to prepare for a huge interview so we will see... Sorry to hear it. I've been there before. I think it will end up helping out in the long run. Just make sure to view it as a positive learning experience. Edit: Basically, what Shack posted... Jenksismyhero
Since this has been more of a general job/career thread than just a "job hunt" thread, i'll add my good news: I settled my first major case a couple months ago and it all got wrapped up this week. $975k on a million dollar policy for the death of a subcontractor on a construction site. He left a minor daughter but no other heirs. Wasn't expecting my firm to give me anything out of it, but I ended up getting a decent bonus and a ~15% raise. Pretty stoked as I was really starting to get worried about paying for daycare for my new kid. Would have been REALLY nice if I had referred the case to the firm, but still a nice surprise. Soxbadger
Ill probably stick with litigation, but I dont know. Ive never really looked around or even explored options. I just always had a job or school, so I always just went with the flow. I could probably stay here forever, but if I dont look around now, I probably never will. HuskyCaucasian
Not really liking my new job at all. I thought I would be ok doing only IT work, but I was very wrong. Not that I cant do it, I just dont enjoy IT only work as much as I thought I would. (Previously I did IT/Audio/Visual/Lighting, I was kind of the catch all for technology). HuskyCaucasian
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 23, 2012 -> 08:39 PM) Have you thought about being a technical director at a theatre type setting? It has crossed my mind as a legitimate option for a career pivot. Just not sure how to head down that road. I have to do some more research and networking. It's interesting because I am, to be honest, more than just a little bit of a Disney fanatic, and when we were down there in May, I thought to myself "I would love to be a behind the sense tech at these shows". So, even back in May a thought was planted. Edited August 25, 2012 by Athomeboy_2000

StrangeSox
Pretty similar, my wife was an editor and now teaches English. I can write something that's grammatically correct and coherent, but she's much better with flow and phrasing.
