CHICAGO -- The Milwaukee Brewers have asked the Chicago White Sox for permission to interview Joey Cora for their managerial position, according to a source familiar with the situation.

But Cora had not heard from the Brewers as of early Thursday afternoon, according to a source.

Former Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin is considered a favorite for the Brewers job, and he's also a candidate for the Chicago Cubs job, according to a source.

Cora was a finalist for the Seattle Mariners job before the Mariners hired Don Wakamatsu in 2009.

Cora spent parts of his 11-year playing career with the Mariners and White Sox, including joining Ozzie Guillen on the Sox's 1993 West Division championship team. He was on three playoff teams with Seattle and was an All-Star in 1997 with the Mariners.

After becoming the White Sox manager, Guillen brought Cora along as his third base coach and bench coach.

ESPNChicago.com baseball reporters Bruce Levine and Doug Padilla contributed to this report.

I hope Cora gets his shot. He’s a bit more subdued then Ozzie and seems to have a nice approach to the game. I’d like to see someone like Ventura step into the clubhouse and take his place.

Robin has never shown interest in working in baseball again. He has been asked before.

Cora is the defense guy. The OFers continue to miss cut-off men. The defense wasn't so good until Vizquel played and calmed Ramirez down. I don't see how his leaving would hurt the White Sox. Good luck to him, I'm sure he wants to make out the line up card. Maybe the Sox could bring in Sandberg to be the bench coach just to piss off Cubs fans.

I actually saw something a while back, quoting him at times, saying he DOES want to get back into it... but not until his kids are all out of high school. I have no idea when that happens.

That's good news. I have wanted him back in the organization forever. Hopefully it works out for him, and Kudos to him for seeing his kids through school first.

He's done some spring training activities with the Sox, but it's clear he doesn't want to commit that time quite yet. It still looks like he has the itch to come back.

Can I ask why?

Why not? He's obviously a good baseball guy if the Brews want to speak to him.

Great suggestion of subbing Omar for Joey. I'd be OK with Omar playing 50 games next year as well, but please not as a starter.

Well, there goes that idea. I miss Ventura and would love to get him back in the organization, but i guess my desire for a continued early 90's White Sox coaching staff nostalgia trip only goes so far. He's a pretty good broadcaster whenever the College World Series rolls around.

If Joey gets job w/ Brewers, apparently Ryne Sandberg is a possibility for 3B. I am not a Cubs hater, but I think it would be hilarious if this happened. Cubs fans would throw a fit that Hendry drove Sandberg to us.

You mean bench coach?
