JP Howell and George Sherrill too. Sherrill would be a minor league deal and Howell would be a nice weapon as a midseason addition, maybe earlier. It would be like a trade. We need some lefties to bring to camp aside from Leesman because if Sale closes and Thornton sets up we still need a specialist. Maybe Sale is in the rotation though.

I trust KW and Coop to make some questionable pen arms into good MLB arms. Obviously not a 100% success rate, but they've had success

Some pretty solid players getting non-tendered, I wouldn't mind seeing Lastings Milledge replace Andruw Jones as our 4th OF and try to sign Eugenio Velez to a minor league contract.

Why not Tony Gwynn Jr., instead? (if healthy)

An elite defending CF with a 1.7 WAR in '10 (2.4 in '09)

Looks like a great 8/9th place hitter when guys in the OF need rest...

I like the fact that Milledge can play all OF positions and has the potential for some pop as well. Tony Gwynn Jr. is a great defender but he's too similar to Pierre. If/when CQ goes down in 2011 Milledge could bat closer to the middle of the order whereas with Gwynn you'd be left with Pierre and Pierre 2.0 taking up two spots in the lineup.

To be honest, either one of them wouldn't be a choice along with several other players. I was worried we might miss Andruw next year, now...not so worried.

yeah, wow! I know KW said they won't trade anyone, but if need be I imagine could get a haul for one of the SPs with how the market looks

The Reds need to pick one of their starting pitchers and move him for a position player or bullpen help now. They flat out have too many starting pitchers.

Arroyo

Volquez

Cueto

Bailey

Mike Leake

Travis Wood

Aroldis Chapman

I think I'm still missing one.

Reds re-sign Bronson Arroyo, 3 years, $35 million. (Rosenthal's twitter)

In 2009, they signed him to a 3 yr., $34 mil contract, so this deal just adds on two more years. He has been a guarantee for 200+ innings, ERA of around 4.00 the last several years. Still seems a bit high, but his last two seasons he was at 3.84 & 3.88 with at least 15 wins.

But that's an NL ERA of 4, not an AL one. And perhaps more importantly, they didn't need to extend him

Good point. When I first saw the signing, I didn't realize it was an extension. That is weird, especially with all of the young pitching talent they have. Maybe they like the effect he has on the youngsters and think he stabilizes the rotation? I don't know?

I think it is a mistake for the Reds to extend him. They didn't need to at this point in time as they have young pitching that's ready to pitch and probably will be better than him. As a Reds fan, I know he's seen as one of their clubhouse leaders and the anchor to the pitching staff, but at the same time, he's just not that good, especially 12 mil per good.

I hope Jocketty(who's a smart GM) has a plan to trade some pitching for more hitting because I think the Reds will have a hard time repeating without upgrades around Votto. And some of their guys aren't getting any younger.
