What's the knock on Saito? His numbers look outstanding, don't get why he's getting considerably less (under $2 million according to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy) than a lot of these guys on the market are getting.

Just his age getting in the way?

Yeah, it's probably the age. He's like 40 something.

Derrek Lee signed a 1 year deal with the Orioles.

Damn. So they've added Reynolds, Hardy and Lee. To go along with a very talented offensive core in Markakis, Jones and Wieters. I won't jump on their bandwagon again after they totally sucked ass last year. But if some of that young talent comes through, they could be a dangerous team next year.

Interesting. Heyman saying he's getting around $8M for the one year. Apparently LaRoche was looking for a 3 year deal at $21M, so BAL went to Lee.

they're not sure on the 8m number, he turned down 8.5m from Pads, but he also could have taken less to play in Camden Yards for one year instead of Petco

Ok, Derek Lee 1 year/$8 or Paul Konerko 3/$36?

I gotta be honest, I think the number is about double what he should have gotten, but the one year deal would be attractive to me given the Sox payroll situation and players in our system. I can see Viciedo being a first baseman if he can hit.

I'd take Konerko...if I had no confidence in having a replacement in a year.

If the Orioles are risking $8 million on him, then it's probably true that their medical staff is happy with him.

Well he came back from the injury and hit well the last few months of last year, didn't he?

Yes, but overall, it's worth noting how much his power numbers really went down. His numbers in the 2nd half include a .362 BABIP. Upon going to Atl., his line drive %age didn't change, his HR numbers went down by a fair amount (Turner Field is a pitchers park), but his average and associated #'s went up because more balls were falling.

I can't believe how Saber-centric you've gone. Your flip-flop is greater than mine. I couldn't stand sabermetrics two years ago. Now I'm a full-blown saber guy. Well, not like chw42. But close.

I'm happy to adopt new numbers as they come along. I do have a Ph.D. from Caltech. :P

My big problem is that I need to get my instincts calibrated on a number. It takes me watching people for a bit to understand how to interpret a BABIP of .292 and I don't like quoting things until I can come up with comparable players as well.

I haven't yet wrapped my head around things like FIP, although I know what they're supposed to do. That's probably on the list for this year.

I definitely was waiting for about 5 years for decent ways of evaluating defense, and I think we're at least finally starting to get close on those, which makes me a lot more willing to use them.

I can't help but think about the possibility of having signed Beltre instead of Konerko, and then Lee instead of Crain. For a few million more dollars this year (obviously we would have more committed down the road), I feel like we could be a lot better.
