Actually, that's a fairly long list of options. None of them are spectacular...but all of them could at least cover the position.

Yea I'm just assuming that the infield is set for next year except at 1B and C. I think Morel is the guy, live or die, and our resources should be spent elsewhere.

Man, Morel sure blew through the ranks rather quickly.

What would you consider the right price? I don't think I'd pay much more for him than what we paid last year. I think we'd be better off trying to find a guy who fits as a better platoon partner with Quentin.

$1 to $1.5 million. Not much more than that.

If you want a platoon in RF, we'd be better off finding a platoon partner for Jones. His fWAR was nearly 2 in a limited role. Better defense and wOBA than Quentin for a fraction of the cost.

I like this Morel kid but I bet many here wondered if Kenny will try to explore the FA/Trade market at third base. Bottom line is Morel is huge question mark and while I wish him the best we have no idea how he is going to perform, what if he tanks? Then what do we have, Teahen? Vizquel? Viciedo?

In that list you have two good bats and a great glove as a backup to a guy with already a good glove. You have to take risks if you want to build through the draft and play your minor league guys.

There remains a key flaw here...the only way it works is if Jones can actually take more playing time than he received this year. I think it's entirely possible that his numbers were so good because he got a lot of much needed time off to stay healthy. Both in 2009 with the Rangers and in early 2010 with the Sox, he got on a hot streak that necessitated more playing time, and almost immediately got hurt. In 09 I think it was a hamstring that nagged at him the whole year, and in 2010 he played a lot in late April and immediately had back spasms and a neck injury that cost him a lot of games in May and probably helped put him back in his slump.

Well if Jones is in a platoon, he would not necessarily need to accept more playing time than 2010. And we have to remember Quentin isn't exactly a good bet to stave off injury himself. Quite a few injuries for such a young guy is worrisome. Carlos missed almost 20 games in 2010 with injuries to five different parts of his body, and had the same inconsistencies as Jones (who missed 3 games for his neck, and 5 games for his back). Quentin will likely cost more than 2x Jones in 2011

Is that another new statistic or did you just accidentally hit an extra key?

Realistically, couldn't Quentin and Jones platoon with each other? It would never actually happen, but it would make sense. Quentin has always hit righties better than lefties, and Jones is obviously the opposite.

In theory somehow Q finds his MVP-esque talent and De Aza is his defensive sub late in games. That would be my idea platoon. Jones just doesnt have much value to me at this point.

Why are some assuming Morel is going to be the starting 3B? The Teahen extension if nothing else, wouldn't have been made if the organization had that much confidence in Morel as a starter for 2011 or 12. Teahen and his $10 mil is going to be starting at 3B, imo.

Ahhh, I've decided that Teahen has never proven to be an everyday MLB player. He's not some vet that deserves his position because he lost it to injury. He's a P O S. I think KW should just chalk that one up as a whoopsies and move on.

Unless something unforseen happens (trade, injury) all signs point to Morel as the opening day 3B. As well they should. He's gonna be a good one.

What signs? I'd like Morel to start, but I don't see it. Help me.

Mark Teahen games played after injury (there will be some overlap due to position changes)

2 games at 1B

8 games at 3B

9 games at DH

10 games in RF

I think it's pretty apparent that Ozzie saw Teahen at 3B and saw the Sox struggle, then saw Vizquel at 3B and saw the Sox go crazy, then again saw Teahen at 3B and again saw the Sox struggle, and from there he connected the dots (justifiably or not) and won't have Teahen be the starter at 3B.

He may be in the long run, but I feel like he's going to struggle quite a bit coming out of the gates. There's a pretty substantial jump between minor league pitching and major league pitching.

And this move will be an experiment in their technique of aggressively pushing people upwards. The Twins had Danny Valencia basically where Morel is now as a 23 year old, upper minor league levels, and they kept him in the minors for another year and a half for seasoning. The Sox are going to push Morel hard and see what he does in the bigs. I can live with that...kid ripped every type of pitching he saw last year...but it's a contrast I'm going to spend the offseason highlighting because I think it's important to watch.

I also think Morel is more talented than Valencia. I don't think Valencia is much more than a .270/.330/.420 type hitter in the majors and that he is due for a huge step back next year.
