justBLAZE
Free-agent outfielder Jermaine Dye, who sat out the 2010 season, intends to play again in '11. Dye said Thursday he already has been contacted by three teams -- the Phillies, Rays and Rockies. Rather than working with an agent, he is representing himself. Multiple teams also were interested in Dye last offseason, including the Cubs, Brewers and Nationals. But Dye chose not to play and acknowledged he turned down a one-year. $3 million offer from the Cubs. Asked if money was as important this time around, Dye said, “No, not at all. I just want to play for a contender and am open to playing other positions. But I won’t do a minor league deal.”" Dye, the 2005 World Series MVP, hit 27 homers and drove in 87 runs for the White Sox in ‘09. From ’05 to ’09, he ranked first among American League outfielders in homers and second in RBI. He was caught in the middle of two recent trends last offseason -- the reluctance of teams to sign older players and the increased emphasis by clubs on defense. Dye at that time expressed a willingness to play first base in addition to the outfield. Link.
hogan873
So he turned down a $3 million deal from the Cubs? Was he saying he didn't want to play for the Cubs or didn't want to play for "only" $3 million? He might be worth a $1 million signing as long as he doesn't mind playing a lot of DH. It was so predictable, its sad. He was offended at playing for $3 million last year so he sits out and now money isn't a concern. Maybe he has a greater appreciation for how lucky he is to be able to play baseball and make that kind of cabbage. I still think he's Paulie's replacement if Paulie leaves. Funny, he's going to make the major league minimum. Amazing how the pride goes away after getting bored sitting out a season. He's certainly going to be refreshed mentally, that's for sure. Not really. 17 year old + 17 year age of consent ≠ pedophilia (thats why I posted that in the first place, I figured someone was going to comment even though there was nothing wrong with what he said)

Texsox
LOL, he still defined exactly the situation that will bring him back. So are people going to critcize him for playing for money, or not playing for money? It still sounds like he's willing to sit out unless a contender wants him. Gee whiz, a guy that wants to play only if there is a shot at a WS and not just to pocket a couple million or suffer through a losing season. Texsox
Or he wanted to play for a team that was a contender and would have accepted less. Not everyone works for the high bidder like a whore. Not everyone works for the high bidder like a whore. He probably could have talked the Giants into wanting him earlier in the season too. Or he could have found several jobs midseason if he'd been willing to DH. The White Sox could have really used some DH help, for example. The Angels as well. elrockinMT
We should sign J Dye. My guess is that bat is still good and he can platoon in RF and at IB to

A terrible defensive RF who is older doesn't magically become passible with sitting at home for a year. And as a 1st baseman, uh no.

The Critic
Did you ever have an ex-girlfriend who was smokin' hot and fun to be around, but something went wrong somewhere and it all fell apart? And you still think about her once in a while all these years later? Then one day, as a goof, you search for her on Facebook and there she is! You get excited and a little nervous to click on her profile, but of course you do, and when you search the photo albums...... ....I'd prefer to remember Jermaine when he was "smokin' hot" for the White Sox. I don't want to see his photo albums now.
justBLAZE
He could make sense pending couple of things of course. For example he needs to prove he can still play at the 2008/2009 (pre ASB), IF Paulie wasn't to come back signing Dye to play 1B/DH (for a minimal contract) coupled with the money saved can get us Dunn to share 1B/DH duties wouldn't be a bad idea.
