hogan873
I wonder if they are looking right now in case they don't re-sign AJ or because they've decided not to re-sign AJ?
chetkincaid
I think Olivo is the back up plan if they can't resign AJ. I think AJ is definitely coming back though - especially since the Marlins have signed John Buck.
maggsmaggs
I would love Miggy to come back. So sad when we traded him for Freddy in 2004 even though it turned out well. He would be better than AJ. No contest.
balfanman
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 09:36 AM) I would love Miggy to come back. So sad when we traded him for Freddy in 2004 even though it turned out well. He would be better than AJ. No contest. I'm not so sure of that. I like Olivos' skill set, especially the ability to throw out base runners, but if what was said about him before is true, you can't have a pitching staff that doesn't want him catching them. For all of A. J.'s faults, the pitching staff aparently loves him.

ThunderBolt
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 11:49 AM) Has that been said at all recently? I know that was his knock as a rookie with the Sox but has that changed? Greinke actually gives a large part of the credit for his CY Young to Olivo. I think Olivo has established a comfort level now that he didn't have when he was younger. Edited November 18, 2010 by Thunderbolt
Chisoxfn
I also should mention I would prefer Olivo to AJ. I want someone different behind the plate. I could end up regretting it and I like AJ as a player but I'm ready for someone else. I want a guy that has a hose behind the plate and can really stop a running game. Plus AJ can be so frustrating to watch at times. Not saying who we get will be better, but I'm ready for a change.
balfanman
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 11:49 AM) Has that been said at all recently? I know that was his knock as a rookie with the Sox but has that changed? I don't know of anything written, but the fact that he's been on what, 7 or 8 teams should be an indicator that he's not well liked. If he is a good, quality reciever I would think that teams would want to keep him around for no more than he costs.

Cali
I would LOVE Olivo behind the dish. Him and Castro would be a nice catching combo...

macsandz
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 07:44 AM) Supposedly, the Sox are looking at potentially signing Miguel Olivo. Rodgers is clueless. His "sources" is foxsports.com. The Sox interest in Olivo is likely just leveraging AJ.
Kenny Hates Prospects
Eh, Olivo is the next best FA out there after AJ (if you aren't viewing VMart as a fulltime starting C that is) and he's actually younger and brings more power, even if he is a lesser hitter overall. I imagine the Sox interest here is genuine.
joeynach
QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 10:25 AM) I think Olivo is the back up plan if they can't resign AJ. I think AJ is definitely coming back though - especially since the Marlins have signed John Buck. If we get Olivio, honestly I hope he is the backup for Ramon Castro. Of the catching candidates left available on the market not named Vmart, if we dont get AJ, I think the next best guy to play the position is Castro, and oh what do you know he is already signed for next year. Rowand44
Well at this point he's a better hitter and much better at throwing runners out than AJ. I guess the two questions would be the price tag and how well he can handle a pitching staff.
joeynach
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 08:02 PM) Well at this point he's a better hitter and much better at throwing runners out than AJ. I guess the two questions would be the price tag and how well he can handle a pitching staff. Another question would be how much importance do you place on a catchers various attributes, his defense, ability to call a game, his hitting, his arm, etc. I guess the importance of those attributes depends on the other pieces in place on your roster. So what do you think is important for the 2011 sox.
Quin
When I was younger, Olivo had just been called up. At the game, a foul ball off Sandy Alomars bat hit me right in the stomach and a lady sitting next to me grabbed it for her grandkids (who weren't at the game). I met Olivo later at Grandstand and he signed my hat and I was happy .
nitetrain8601
I like it. I prefer VMart, but Olivo would be nice. I still think we resign AJ.
Jordan4life_2007
We have no chance at Martinez. I'd love to get Olivo. We'd be above average or at worst average (can't say Beckham is above average yet) straight up the middle.
Dick Allen
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 06:02 PM) Well at this point he's a better hitter and much better at throwing runners out than AJ. Jordan4life_2007
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 07:52 PM) Better hitter? 2010 was the first time his OBP was over .300. If you don't like AJ, you won't like Olivo. If you value defense you will. Olivo is pretty much the closest thing to Yadier Molina in the game. Olivo was the best hitting catcher in mlb the 1st half of 2010. The 2nd half? Brutal.
