Heyman tweeted 18 minutes ago that they are closing in on a deal, not yet official.
balfanman
I would rather the Sox just resign Konerko & A.J. for that kind of money.
Chisoxfn
People really don't use common sense. If the Sox bid 3yrs 48 million and the Tigers bid is 4yrs 50 million, why in the hell would the Sox not just offer the extra year and 2 million? Clearly the Sox didn't offer 3 years and 48 million. 3E8
QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 11:51 AM) If the rumors have any bit of truth to them, then I'm happy that it appears we have some money to spend. Or KW has been in talks which makes him confident he can move existing salary
Balta1701
Well, there's the first big contract from the Tigers. I'd expect more are coming.
Special K
QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 11:58 AM) ??? And Dunn does? No Dunn does not. But he is also one of the best power hitters in baseball, mashing much better than Martinez. So if you're going to spend $ on a lefthanded stick that doesn't play defense, why not spend it on the guy who hits 40 bombs a year.

I'll say it again and again, when was the last time the Sox actually signed a top-tier free agent? They don't get involved in a bidding wars in free agency. I refuse to believe we will be a top contender for any of the big boys except Konerko since he is one of own. The Sox MO is try to find free agent bargains, re-sign their own guys and trade for proven talent. They just don't do the big-time free agency thing, which in some respects is good because then you don't become the Cubs and get stuck with horrendous contracts. Special K
QUOTE (balfanman @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 12:27 PM) Because Dunn is very insistant that he can play defense and refuses to DH. He's already came out and said that he is willing to accept a diminished role as a fielder. If he wants to play 1B for 30 games out of the season, let him do it, it's not going to kill our defense that much. If he accepts that role, do you not agree he is the best available bat the Sox could ask for. Besides Thome of course.
witesoxfan
If the Tigers aren't lying through their teeth and Martinez is going to be the DH most of the time, then this eliminates Detroit from the Adam Dunn sweepstakes. If Adam Dunn is insistent about playing in the field, then this eliminates Detroit from the Adam Dunn sweepstakes (unless they want to put him in LF, which would be awesome). If the Sox truly were in on the bidding then they can offer a similar contract to Dunn, while still having 1B open, which further eliminates Detroit from the bidding. I don't see how Dunn can end up in Detroit at this point.

That's the good news part of this - the 3/48 number is obviously inaccurate, but the fact that the Sox took a shot at all means they have some money to spend. If he accepts that role, do you not agree he is the best available bat the Sox could ask for. Besides Thome of course. Possibly. although I think that Martinez could provide that as well. Maybe not 40 home runs, but an equally solid hitter that plays catcher and 1st base. It would really depend on what the final dollar numbers / terms would be. I do know that while he's no defensive stud, Martinez is a much better defender than Dunn is. I haven't seen that much of Dunn in the field, but every time I have it has been down right comical. elrockinMT
Let me express myself here in a friendly but very firm way towards the Sox brass and even to some of my friends here on Soxtalk: If the White Sox fail to offer arbitration to our free agents to be - especially PK and AJP- and they are allowed to just walk and we don't get at least draft choices- then we have a questionable group in the front office making decisions. We have productive folks who want to win and are great teammates and for some reason we lose sight of their contributions. I would like to see them return, however, I know that sometimes that just isn't going to happen. I have said it before and will continue to express my feeling that we don't value our own people enough. For some reason we seem to think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence ( or in someone elses ballpark). Victor Martines for $50M. That's crazy. Konerko would be a huge mistake, but I don't necessarily think AJ. Konerko would be a reasonable price for one year, so not offering him would be inexcusable. AJ's cost would be a little more questionable. But I think they offer PK arbitration.
scotty22hotty
Even though they overpaid, this is a nice signing by DET for a C/DH that has about two more prime offensive years left... If vmart is worth 12.5 a year I see no reason why AJ wont at least be offered 14M/2 from a team. Also since the Tigers are losing their 19th pick, I'd expect them to sign a couple more Type A FAs. scenario
I think it's a fairly safe bet that the Sox offer arbitration to both PK and AJ.

RockRaines
This is awful reporting. The Sox have offers out to bats on the free agent market, but certainly not Victor Martinez. If there was an offer of this size out to a slugger, which I have no idea of offer size, I can say with almost 100% certainty its not VMART. I hate how one "source" names us and then 100 more run with it like its fact. I wish someone would fact check one of these days.
