LDF
when we continue to have the success we are having now, who should the players be and how to use them.
YASNY
Borchard, Cotts for sure.
LDF
Borchard, Cotts for sure. rauch tofu, but does that mean that they have to be on the 40 man roster?
SoxFanForever
Rauch and Borchard already are im pretty sure and the others will be also. Also, does anyone know what is going to happen with White now? Is he gone or what?
Jim Fainter
You have to be added to the 40 man roster before you are called up., so that's what you work with. Joe B for sure, Rivera, Hummel, Adkins. Question: When we send a player down for reassignment (Rios), is he still on the 40 man?
upnorthsox
Rauch, Diaz, Cotts, Yofu, Munoz, 2 or 3 out of this group. The idea is to hopefully catch lightning in a bottle ala FRod for Anaheim last yr. Hummel, Borchard, Miles, left handed power bat and guys to spell your old vets(Robbie and Jose). upnorthsox
What about Jeremy Reed? He'd have to go on the 40 man and there's no need to add him this early.
LDF
He'd have to go on the 40 man and there's no need to add him this early. there are some young players you do not want to start their major league time clock to start this early. i just didn't know the whole ins and outs of the 40 man in ref to the major league clock. Cerbaho-WG
I'd look for Borchard, Diaz, and maybe Adkins as well as Hummel/Miles. All of them are on the 40 except Miles.
Rex Hudler
My thoughts are Borchard, Adkins, Sanders, Hummel, Riviera, possibly Diaz and Munoz. Cotts will be added only if he is needed to pitch this year. I doubt you will see a courtesy call-up for him. Also, keep in mind that since the Sox are in a pennant race, they may call up fewer guys. It is not always a positive thing to bring up lots of guys and not play them at all, but you also want to reward guys. Different teams have different philosophies about what is best, especially when a pennant race is involved.

Basically, if a player is designated for assignment, that means they are taking him off the 40-man roster and wanting to send him to AAA outright. If they want to send a guy like White who has extended service time, down to AAA without taking him off the 40-man, I believe it is handled differently, but I am not sure how. Excellent points A team out of contention is much more likely to give guys a "cup of coffee" because they can afford to give them playing time regardless of wins and losses. The last thing the Sox can afford it to bring them up just to play them and give them a cup of coffee. Also, sitting on the bench isn't gonna do much. I think all those guys would understand if they weren't called up to the parent club in september for some experience or what not. When you are in a pennant race you are really only gonna call the few guys up who you think actually will contribute and that you have confidence throwing into the fire at this point in the season. On the flip side, some teams want to call u p young guys in a pennant race to expose them to a winning atmosphere and what it is like in a big league pennant race. Just depends on the organizations philosophy. And budget, of course.

Rex Hudler
THE roster is expanded in September Is that a question or a statement?
VAfan
Regardless of who the Sox bring up, what do they need? 1. A right handed infielder who, with Graffy, can rest Jose and Robbie against lefties. 2. A lefty pinch hitter who could hit for Crede, Olivo, or Sandy. 3. A power right handed arm for the pen. 4. A 5th starter (if Wright stumbles) or if we need a spot start. 5. Possibly a second pinch runner behind Harris. 6. A better outfield defensive replacement than Harris. Those of you who know our minors better, who fits these roles? 1. Hummel? 2. Borchard? 3. Rauch? 4. Cotts? 5. Miles? 6. Borchard again? I think you're correct on all of these players, but I think that Felix Diaz should replace Cotts on your list at #4. Diaz is already on the 40-man, and Cotts isn't. Plus, Diaz is having a good year(minus W-L) record at AAA, so he should be given a chance to be our 5th starter if Wright can't do the job. Other than Cotts, I think the rest of the players you mentioned should be called up.

Tonight Cotts tossed his third gem in a row, and this time walked no one. Cotts is right on schedule for the 5th spot, which next comes up August 12th. If we can keep up our torrid pace, it might not be as pressured as Wright's spot was tonight (with a tie for first at stake). I've never seen Cotts pitch, but I'll take Rex Hudler's word that he's the real deal and is ready. I see him as our secret postseason weapon in addition to cementing that #5 role. Plus, I'd like to see him in meaningful games before next year, so we know a lot more about what we have.
