joeynach
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 09:45 PM) Putz closing would be a good thing for this organization. I agree with this 100%, though I am also in on trading for Heath Bell, usually the asking price for closer about to make $6M+ and close to free agency isnt very high. I think Rafael Soriano was traded from the Braves to Rays last year for something like one mid level minor league.
joeynach
Wait how did this become sox send $1.5M to sox send $3.5M, that makes the trade less good. Any replacement is gonna get paid essentially 500K anyway so the net gain is like $1.5M, before the net gain was $3.5M, enough to translate to a real Major league addition. Well, the $3.5 appears to be the real number. I'm not sure who changed it or when.

I think Rafael Soriano was traded from the Braves to Rays last year for something like one mid level minor league. Soriano was traded because the Braves couldn't afford him. Normally, his value would have been much higher than that, and it's probably going to cost a couple of good arms to get Bell. With the number of quality arms on the free agent market, trading for one at this point in time would not be smart unless you got whoever for pennies on the dollar, and I don't see that situation arising. Any replacement is gonna get paid essentially 500K anyway so the net gain is like $1.5M, before the net gain was $3.5M, enough to translate to a real Major league addition. Initially Jon Paul Morosi was told by a source that we were paying $1.5 million to the Braves. However, as time elapsed and more details became available, it was learned that the White Sox were actually paying $3.5 million to the Braves. The thread subtitle was then updated to reflect that. Basically Linebrink was traded for AJ for 2010 at no cost increase. Its basically like signing AJ for $5.5 million and eliminating Linebrink from the payroll at no cost. Linebrink was awful at times, but he did have his moments when he was very good. Obviously didn't live up to the contract, but his signing was something that had to be done at the time it was done. southsider2k5
QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 05:06 PM) If they're deferring cash til next year, it means that Buehrle may be going bye-bye after this season. I could see him coming back cheaper.

Memories. It's funny. I really enjoyed the 2003 season as a whole. And even though we came up short, god damn did it end spectacularly well for us anyway (Bartman). (When KC was good at that point)!
