ChiliIrishHammock24
Was looking up the moves we made for the 2006 season and they look pretty similar to the moves we are making for the 2011 season..... 2006 - Added Jim Thome 2011 - Added Adam Dunn Both are slugging lefthanders who are DH's are are known for having 1 major skill, and that's smashing home runs. Both expensive. 2006 - Signed AJ Pierzynski to $5M annual contract 2011 - Signed AJ Pierzynski to $4M annual contract 2006 - Signed Paul Konerko to $12.5M annual contract 2011 - Likely to sign Paul Konerko to annual contract around $12M Key pieces that don't match up are the Sox trading for Javy Vazquez, and then resigning Jon Garland. Kenny Hates Prospects
One bad thing about that offseason was that we left the career year guys in the pen unprotected. Hopefully this year is different. The Javy deal was to put the then-future starter in the pen and go with 5 vets. We don't need to make that one this year. We also turned CF over to BA that year. This team may well have a higher payroll and less holes when it's all said and done. The markets are different, and there are probably more bargains out there now than before. One other thing was we traded the unwanted Marte for Mack who was basically our Teahen. Hopefully this time we trade both types and get cash. Rowand44
I have to wait until a first basemen is actually signed to begin to compare. I wont believe the Pauly speculation until it's a done deal.
ChiliIrishHammock24
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 03:24 PM) 2006: Trade struggling reliever Marte to NL 2011: Trade struggling reliever Linebrink to NL I thought about that, but Linebrink was a salary dump, Marte was not. bschmaranz
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 02:36 PM) I thought about that, but Linebrink was a salary dump, Marte was not. I'm still amazed that Marte even has a gig still. He's made $7.75 million the next two years and pitched 31 innings, TOTAL.
LittleHurt05
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 02:36 PM) I thought about that, but Linebrink was a salary dump, Marte was not. Good point. Marte was partly dumped because of issues with Ozzie. I also remember that towards the end of the season they like couldn't pitch him at home or something. Either he did something to the fans or was just flat out awful. QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 02:39 PM) I'm still amazed that Marte even has a gig still. He's made $7.75 million the next two years and pitched 31 innings, TOTAL. He was actually one of the key components of the Yankees 2009 WS. He faced 8 Phillies batters, including Ryan Howard 4 times, and didn't give up a single baserunner.
