caulfield12
QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 01:14 AM) I would like to know where people get this idea that Dye can actually play 1st base and be passable. This is a guy who sat out all last year, and has been an OF. Taking an older player, moving him to a new position and paying him more money than other teams were willing to pay him last offseason sounds like a recipe for disaster. I would rather pay for a proven quantity than to roll the dice. #1, because of his size, he's not fast, but he's definitely quicker than Konerko. I think he played basketball out in California, in high school or junior college. He has a bit more leaping ability, although that's not saying much. #2, he wouldn't cost us any draft picks AND we'd get the 2 picks from Konerko (of course, with the D-Backs it would be protected, so 2nd round) #3, we'd be in on him for only a one year deal, so we'd have flexibility going forward we didn't with the likes of Teahen, Linebrink, Pierre, Buehrle coming off the books or being traded, the certainty that we'll know where we are with both Peavy and Sale (well, hopefully this time next year their futures will both be clearly defined)...in other words, it doesn't force our hand with Viciedo seemingly unable to play 3B, although LF/RF are still possibilities for 2010, surely he'll get a Josh Fields-like shot at one of them just to see how good he could do out there, which can't seemingly be worse than Dye or Quentin the last 2 seasons I don't know, I'd rather sign Dye for just one year and work all off-season on transitioning him to 1B (let's say it's a contract for $5 million) and spending that other $10 million on relievers, spreading it among 2-3 veteran guys and knowing/predicting one will go bust. I'm thinking of pitchers here like Guerrier or Crain, maybe a notch below what Crain will get, because I'm expecting coming off his 2010 season that he'll get at least $4.5-5.5 million from some team...I would be shocked if he signs for under $4. Guerrier should come in at that $3.0-4.0 range....I want no part of paying the type of money we gave to Linebrink and Dotel...give me 3 guys at $3.333 instead of two at $5 million per. Jordan4life_2007
Jermaine Dye's second stats from 2009 (246 PAs): .179/.293/.297. Arguably the worst defensive player in the game. Has played as much ML ball as I have the last year. And he'll be 37 soon. NO.THANK.YOU.

hogan873
$10 million for Pena doesn't really surprise me, but I'm certainly glad it wasn't the Sox making that deal. Good power with little contact. Who knows, he might have a decent year, but if he does he'll be even more expensive next year. I'm beginning to think D. Lee is a better option than PK. Cheaper and he's probably a guy that really wants to prove something. Plus, from everything I've heard he's a classy guy. Him at 1st most of the time with Dunn DHing. I like that. And it would free up $4 million plus for a bullpen arm. I'll welcome Paulie back if that's what happens, but I really want to see a resolution of this today. Texsox
Do we ever look for flexibility to sign an established player for a big contract? Or is the flexibility always to sign more cheap guys and hope they have great seasons?

BigSqwert
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 07:21 AM) Adam Dunn? Certainly the exception and not the norm.
Balta1701
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 08:23 AM) Certainly the exception and not the norm. Only because people define the term "Signed" so narrowly as to ignore all the other big contracts handed out to guys we already have or guys acquired through trades. I think Konerko signs, but most of us will think it'll be for too much money. My prediction, the Sox cave and sign him for 2/$28 million with an option for a third year. Mattchoo
I'm not excited at all about signing PK to 3/40+, or DLee for 10M. Can't the Sox get in on the Prince Fielder talk? I'll settle for PK or DLee if it is a good deal. 2/24 for PK, or DLee for about 6-7M 1 yr. Do any of us expect trades this week for the Sox? flavum
I think this thing ends today. I don't care either way if it's Konerko or Lee. Konerko- Happy for sentimental reasons. He's been here 12 years. Glad he'll be around for 2-3 more years. Lee- Probably the better baseball decision if it's one year. He'll be cheaper, which gives them more money for other needs, and they get two draft picks for losing Konerko. Truthfully, if given the choice, I'm leaning a lot more toward Lee, but we don't even know if that's on the table.
Dick Allen
Cowley has himself covered. He has Paulie to the Cubs to the Rangers to the DBacks, back to the Sox, and Kerry Wood too expensive even if they don't sign Paulie to possibly Kerry Wood if Paulie goes elsewhere because the sources just assumed Paulie would re-sign. When this situation comes to an end he will be proud of himself and go slam all the other reporting.
Rooftop Shots
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 02:35 AM) Still think Reinsdorf is hung up on Paulie and won't let him leave even if it means overpaying. I'm thinking the same thing. I believe that KW would no longer like to stall and risk losing other options as well as a little extra money for the bullpen before it's too late. The only way that I'll deal with JR overpaying him for sentimental sakes, is if he decides to open up for the bullpen as well, and not leave KW in a bad bullpen predicament. If JR REALLY wants to win again, then why would he over pay on one end, and handcuff us in another? It doesn't make sense unless he goes insanely all out, and forks our bullpen money also. Can't see it though!

I'm with this if a long term deal could be worked out. Everyone knows what Gonzales is going to get from Boston and Prince should be a little less. I would rather have Fielder for 6 years at 18-20 than PK for 3 at 14-15. What SD got from Boston in a trade also sets what to expect, actually a little less, the Sox would have to give up to get him. I would love to get in on the Prince Fielder talks, he's looking at $11M in arbitration which ain't too bad, but I just don't think the Sox have the pieces that they are willing to part with. I imagine the Brewers are looking for pitching and we just don't have it to give. Seems like we think Sale is the real deal so we don't wanna lose him, and with the question marks about Peavy, we can't really trade a starter or we'll have a circus at the fifth spot that we've had some many years in the past. chisox2334
the only reason im saying that today is because kenny willams told Padilla of Espn to expect a signing by 5 pm today whether its bullpen, konerko, or something else

In a SHOCKER, White Sox sign Carl Crawford for 5/$100 million. Then Derrek Lee signs at a one year discounted rate because "he really wants to be in Chicago and wants to win another ring, and the White Sox are committed to winning a championship". Everybody hold hands and sing IMAGINE...
