Sox signed Brian Bruney and they're bringing back Donny Lucy. Both minor league deals.

Bruney sounds like MacDougal.

Lucy's role, I'd imagine, is to back up and help Tyler Flowers with the defensive and pitcher handling aspects in Charlotte.

Yup, he's a walk machine. His velocity also dropped about 2 MPH last year.

White Sox Sign Brian Bruney

By Tim Dierkes [December 13, 2010 at 1:41pm CST]

The White Sox signed reliever Brian Bruney to a minor league deal, reports Baseball America's Matt Eddy. Bruney, 29 in February, struggled mightily in 17 2/3 innings for the Nationals this year after coming over from the Yankees in a trade. After a May release he hooked on with the Brewers and Mets, but did not return to the Majors. The Sox also re-signed 28-year-old minor league catcher Donny Lucy, according to Eddy.

Donny Lucy is one of the more likable guys on the farm. He seems like the type of dude who may never make it as a player but might carve out a career for himself as a coach or manager. It was nice seeing him have the success he did for us last year given all the s*** he's battled through. Good luck to the guy in Charlotte.

I wish they would just hire him as a coach.

I think that's where this is headed, unless Donny can catch lightning in a bottle. If some other org comes along to give him a chance to start in AAA and be their 3rd catcher, I'm sure he'd take it. But barring that, I'd bet he does this another year or two, then "retires" and gets retained as the roving catching instructor or something similar.

I'm glad the Sox re-signed Lucy.

Sounds strange, but there has to be some sort of value for the 3rd catcher on a roster (well, he's non-roster, but you get the point) looking back at some of the garbage that has occupied this spot in the past.... Raul Casanova, Gustavo Molina, Ben Davis, etc...

Lucy might not be a toolshed, but he isn't awful at anything, either. Still can't believe the Sox took him in the draft above Kurt Suzuki.
