It's truly going to be ROCKTOBER for me!

October 1st, Bob Mould (book reading and acoustic performance)

October 8th, The Last Vegas (D Generation apparently cancelled....bummer)

October 15th, Anthrax/Testament/Death Angel

:headbang :headbang

Going to try to hit the Double Door Halloween show this year, too. Good times!!

After missing the tour the first time around a couple of years ago and being devastated over it, I finally got to see Zappa Plays Zappa on the Tour de Frank tour last night and it was awesome. I would have liked seeing the old FZ bandmates like Napoleon Murphy Brock, Ike Willis, Steve Vai, etc., in the last incarnation, but the new lineup with the young players was really incredible. The marimba player in particular was brilliant.

As a bonus, ZpZ was on a twin bill with Return to Forever who I have wanted to see live for a long time. Chick Corea was great (He sat in on King Kong with the Dweezil band, and I got to meet him after the show), and there are no words to describe how amazing Stanley Clarke is. An additional treat is that Jean-Luc Ponty is part of the curent FtF lineup, and it has been more than 20 years since I had seen him play live.

Best live music experience in a long time.

Awesome. Glad you go to see it, it's a really great show. I missed it this time around, but I've seen it twice before, so I don't feel too bad about it. Really amazing to see how well they duplicate Frank's sound.

On a somewhat related note: Why does new music completely blow? Don't get me wrong, I like a handful of newer bands, but it's really, really rare that I'll listen to a new group and find a unique sound. A large percent of the music that's on the radio nowadays makes it seem like everyone has decided to retread the same sound album after album, song after song. I get that people like pop music, but jesus christ how about an original thought for once?

My feeling is that there's as much "good music" and as much "crappy music" as there's ever been. I just think that there may be too much music and too many ways to access it. It makes it harder to find the stuff that will grab you, but if you're willing to search it's still out there.

As far as the record industry and related media are concerned, they will always market to the audience most likely to spend their cash, and that audience gets younger and younger all the time.

I guess my point wasn't so much that the music nowadays isn't good, because there certainly is plenty of good music if you're willing to work. However, the lack of creativity nowadays is just damn depressing. Even the good stuff nowadays lacks a unique sound that separates it from its peers. It's been a long, long time since I've heard a band with a truly unique sound.

Art of Dying

Black Tide

Sevendust

Main Stage:

Escape the Fate

Bullet for my Valentine

Seether

Three Days Grace

Avenged Sevenfold

Is there anything better than being at an all day concert? This thing will prolly run 2 till 11, and I will be metal guns a blazin'

I could have had free tickets to that last year, but my m*****f***ing father in law gave them to his stupid, hipster daughter who likes indie music.

I can agree with that point to a large degree. It gets tougher as time goes on to create something truly original without stepping way outside the established templates of music, and when someone does step outside those templates, it's often not received well because it's outside of people's comfort zones.

Personally, I'm okay with someone "painting within the established lines" if the energy and the melody is there. I don't need them to reinvent the wheel, I just need to like the wheel they've made. A few unique twists and turns are nice, but not necessary, at least for me.

Totally agree.

"Originality" in music is almost impossible, based on the fact that for anyone musician to pick up a guitar or write lyrics they are usually inspired by OTHER music to do so. Whatever influences them as an artist will more than likely show up in the music they write and perform.

There's a HUGE difference between being inspired by something and creating an original sound. Just because someone is inspired by something doesn't mean that they need to make a sound that's nearly identical.

Personally, the ability to set yourself apart and create a unique sound is incredibly important. I get tired of bands sounding alike. It's boring. Anyone can pick up a guitar, play three chords over and over again and sound like any new Green Day song. I'd much rather listen to a band that at least puts forth the effort to sound different. Mostly for these reasons, I'm not a fan of pop music or the radio, and I realize it's just me, but listening to the same general thing over and over again gets old quick.

I don't listen to pop or mainstream rock radio at all, and I find plenty of bands that I enjoy the s*** out of. I don't concern myself with unique sounds or originality, whatever makes me interested musically or lyrically, I'll listen to. It's just a personal thing.

In fact I don't think I could say I've ever listened to anything I would call 100% original. Everything I listen to sounds at least a little like something else. And I don't mind at all...

Foo Fighters were f***ing incredible last night. They played for 2.5 hours, and brought the house down.

They played two covers in the encore (Tom Petty and Queen)...they were clearly having a good time, since the Queen cover (Tie Your Mother Down) was completely spontaneous and not part of the original set list.

Here's a review; the setlist is at the bottom of the article.

November in Atlanta, I'll get to see em for the 3rd or 4th time. It has always been a great show IMO. I'd go see them, and/or Chris Cornell ANYDAY of the week.

Step 1. Foo Fighters create video of the band going into the showers together at a truck stop.

Step 2. This video annoys the infamous Westboro baptist Church.

“The entertainment industry is a microcosm of the people in this doomed nation: hard-hearted, hell-bound, and hedonistic,” leader Fred Phelps wrote on the church’s website. “These people have a platform and should be using it to encourage obedience to God; instead they teach every person who will listen all things contrary to him: fornication, adultery, idolatry, f**s.”

Step 3: Foo Fighters have fun with it.

As expected, the WBC showed up to protest the show yesterday (Sept. 16) afternoon. What they didn't expect, however, was a truck-pulled float carrying all five members of Foo Fighters dressed in trucker outfits and wigs identical to those they donned in their recent 'Hot Buns' video. The band played the country parody song 'Keep It Clean,' heard in the video, skewering the protesters as they looked on with their picket signs in hand.

Watch the Foos' impromptu performance below, and be sure to look out for guitarist Pat Smear's hilarious lip prosthetic.

This is 21 kinds of awesome.

Stephen Colbert meeting Radiohead is such a special occasion, a regular episode of "The Colbert Report" wasn't sufficient.

The Comedy Central show will air its first hour-long episode Sept. 26, when Colbert sits down with the British rock group.

Radiohead will perform four songs, featuring material off its most recent album, "The King of Limbs," as well as the recently debuted and unreleased track, "The Daily Mail." An additional song will also be performed for the online version of "The Colbert Report."

Colbert said in a statement: "I look forward to meeting the Radioheads and leveraging their anti-corporate indie cred to raise brand awareness for my sponsors."

bumping for anyone who might be interested, just started.

not bad overall, definitely better than the previous two albums and some songs that are already standing out to me.
