This is so depressingly true about a large number of bands. Never really gone into Thin Lizzy all that much, but I know this song is a Thin Lizzy tribute, and that song is very awesome. I'll have to check out Lizzy sometime.

That is a great song. Great homage to Phil Lynott and the boys for sure.

The new Eminem & Royce Da 5'9" EP is very impressive. As you'd expect anything else from these two reuniting.

Just bought it. Didn't realize it had come out, I don't listen to much hip hop anymore, but I know those two together get it done.

I'm likely the only one in here that appreciates them, but Ween is really an awesome band. Some of their stuff is just sheer brilliance.

That's not entirely true, but I have only heard dribs and drabs of their stuff other than the "The Mollusk" album that someone played for me probably 10 years ago and I thought was just about brilliant.

I REALLY need to dig into their back catalog though because they are great. Thanks for reminding me about these guys.

Wow, I remember Hum...I have one of their albums buried around here somewhere...I seem to remember it having a zebra on it for some reason or another...I remember green and a zebra...

As for the discussion about bands that never made it big, there are just so many of them...I have hundreds of albums by bands that the average person has never heard of, and that even pretty big music people have never heard of...

And on a completely opposite note, was mopping the floors in my place and put on Pearl Jam's Backspacer as I have given it a rest since it came out...such an awesome album...the lyrics are really their best in years and years...possibly their best ever. I pray they continue this level of quality with their next album...

You'd Prefer an Astronaut. One of my favorite albums, I still listen to it pretty regularly. If you like it, you should give their followup(and last) album "Downward is Heavenward" a listen

The Mollusk is a seriously great album, as is the rest of their stuff depending on the mood you're in. Their s*** goes from being delightfully brown (Pure Guava) to low-fi punk (GodWeenSatan: The Oneness) to 'poppy' (or as close as you'll get for Ween with White Pepper) to a taste of just about everything on 'Chocolate and Cheese.' Definitely recommend their other albums as well (quebec, Shinola, 12 Country Greats and La Cucaracha to a lesser extent). I can't say I recommend The Pod to anyone right away as I still have issues listening to it, but it's got some decent tracks as well. It's just incredibly brown and tough to listen to, though.

It's easy to listen a couple of Ween tracks and discount them as a juvenile band and nothing else, but that'd be a mistake. They definitely have a number of tracks that are designed to get a cheap laugh or two, but I think the contrast between those songs and their "serious" ones is really effective in making the whole album an enjoyable experience. They also have a lot of songs that are tributes to other bands/artists (such as the one I linked to in my previous post), and when listening to their catalog, it's clear how much they really love music and the people that play it. There's a huge appreciation for the people that came before them, which is one of their most endearing traits IMO.

Any time. Over the past year or two, Ween has really become one of my favorite bands (alongside Mr. Bungle -- "California" is one of the best and most interesting albums I've ever listened to in my life). At this point, they're probably ahead of Zappa, but that could just be a tendency to favor the artists most recently in my mind.

EDIT: I'm kind of embarrassed that I wrote a whole post about Ween and didn't even bother to mention that Deaner is a great, great

Will Chicago have any modern/alternative rock stations (other than obviously XRT, whatever they count as)?

XRT is trash, and certainly not an alt rock station.

Nope, nothing modern. First we lost 94.7 which was a great station, now we lose q101 which wasn't a great station but was seriously the only contemporary rock station left.
