People have been talking 10/300 for Pujols since ARoid signed his last deal. Y'all really are surprised at Pujols pushing for something on that order?

I'm not surprised, I'm just not 100% a team is going to give it to him, and if they do, if it's not the NYY, how damaging the deal will be to the team that gives it to them. He will be 32 the first year of that deal. I'm just not sure how that deal can be justified unless a team is in a great position to maximize the first 4-5 years of it. I guess I can see the LAA making the best of that deal or something similar.

i thought the cards drew a lot of people? meaning why is their payroll 95-100 mil? with a team that usually contends every year and a marketable player like pujols, you would think they would have a payroll around 120mil or so

so much has to do with the size of media market a team is in. Even being the 2nd team in the 3rd largest market as the Sox are, is better than being the 21st market overall. The Rangers, in the 7th largest has their financials listed in the documents deadspin obtained, a lot of "hidden" income, including their new large TV deal.

When he has spent the past 2 years saying it was not about the money, yes I am kind of surprised.

If St. Louis hadn't offered something that even the people who wanted to call Pujols greedy were thinking was insulting, then we'd potentially have the chance to test that.

You're sort of changing the argument. You say that we shouldn't be surprised that Pujols is asking for A-Rod money, but then you say that we can't be sure what he's asking for.

Atleast one team won't be bidding on Pujols

“For the game’s health as a whole, when we’re talking about 30 million dollar players, I think it’s asinine,” Williams said in an interview with Comcast SportsNet. “We have gotten to the point of no return. Something has to happen. And if it means the game being shut down for the sake of bringing sanity to it, to franchises that aren’t going to stop the insanity, I’m all for it.”

...

“I personally, from a competitive standpoint, would love to be on an even playing field with everyone,” Williams said. “But it’s really difficult for me to complain too much when we still have a higher payroll than some of the others. So at least we have a fighting chance.”

Pirates, Royals, Marlins...Kenny Williams is looking out for you. And he’s not the only one.

“Jerry Reinsdorf put it best when he and I had a conversation about it, he said, ‘It’s a shame that our game is played, and when the game starts, everybody plays under the same rules, the same 27 outs. The problem is, before the game, the rules are completely different.’”

...

If Pujols does hit the open market, only a handful of teams will be able to afford him. Would the White Sox go after him? The answer is no. Not at that price.

“If (Jerry Reinsdorf) gave me $30 million dollars right now, I’m not going to spend it on one guy. Sorry White Sox fans,” Williams said. “But I tell you what, I’m going to take that $30 million and I’m going to distribute it around. My team is going to be better as a whole than it is with one player who might get hurt. Then you’re done. Sorry, that’s just me. And that’s no disrespect to a future Hall of Famer, first ballot, one of the greatest players in history.”

Drats!

I love this.

I would gladly take Pujols/replacement level players over Rios/Konerko/Teahen.

If spent wisely than yes, but $30 million doesn't go very far in FA anymore. Hunter at 18 mill, Crawford at 20.5, etc.

With the Sox payroll at 125 mill I would be happy to have Pujols at $30 mill, it's just the years I would be concerned about.
