whitesoxfan101
QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 26, 2011 -> 04:15 PM) Actually their defense is that Tressel hid the infraction and then lied, and that pretty much looks like the truth at this point. All that dumbass had to do was report the emails to the compliance dept. Well I would certainly agree with that. This is a classic example of the coverup being worse than the crime. I really don't think any of the stuff that has leaked out in recent months would have ever done so had he reported the emails immediately. If Tressel loses his job like eveybody thinks he will, he has nobody to blame but himself. Edited May 27, 2011 by whitesoxfan101

Its already been reported that the compliance dept reviewed every vehicle purchase made by the players, as they have to register them with the NCAA. I think thats stated pretty clearly in this story. It also states several times that there was no NCAA violation in the car sales. Ray Small came out today and refuted the report from before saying that he was misquoted. zenryan
Tressel resigns Columbus Dispatch Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel has resigned, university sources told The Dispatch today. Less than three months after President E. Gordon Gee and Athletic Director Gene Smith said they fully supported their embattled coach, mounting pressure, a pending NCAA disciplinary hearing and new revelations about the culture of the program forced the university to act on their once-revered coach, sources said. Neither Gee, Smith nor Tressel could be reached immediately for comment. Sources said assistant coach Luke Fickell, who had been named to coach the first five games of the season while Tressel served his suspension for withholding information from the university compliance office and the NCAA, will serve as interim coach of the Buckeyes all of next season. The Dispatch has obtained a memo Gee sent to OSU trustees this morning: "I write to let you know that later this morning we will be announcing the resignation of Jim Tressel as head coach of the University's football program. As you all know, I appointed a special committee to analyze and provide advice to me regarding issues attendant to our football program. In consultation with the senior leadership of the University and the senior leadership of the Board, I have been actively reviewing the matter and have accepted Coach Tressel's resignation. "My public statement will include our common understanding that throughout all we do, we are One University with one set of standards and one overarching mission. The University's enduring public purposes and its tradition of excellence continue to guide our actions," Gee wrote. Ohio State's football program came under fire in December when six players were suspended by the NCAA for selling or trading uniforms and other memorabilia to a Columbus tattoo-parlor owner. The NCAA also drew criticism for allowing the players to participate in the Sugar Bowl instead of serving their suspensions immediately. Tattoo-parlor owner Edward Rife was under investigation for drug trafficking when his unrelated trading for OSU memorabilia came to light. It was revealed in federal court on Friday that Edward Rife, owner of Fine Line Ink Tattoos on Sullivant Avenue on the Hilltop, agreed in December to plead guilty to drug trafficking and money laundering. As part of the agreement, Rife must forfeit all of his OSU memorabilia if he does not come up with $50,000, the amount federal investigators say he made in profit selling marijuana. Tressel expressed surprise in December at the revelations of his players being involved with the tattoo-parlor operator, but the university learned in January that Tressel was told of the relationship last April in an email from a former OSU player. The coach did not share that information with the university as his contract requires, nor did he reveal it when he signed an NCAA compliance form in September verifying that he was unaware of any possible violations. He was suspended two games and fined $250,000 for his actions. He requested that his suspension be increased to five games to match the penalty his players received. The university obliged. Tressel's contract was renewed last spring through 2014. He earns about $3.7 million annually in salary and other incentives. He leaves Ohio State with an impressive coaching resume, having led the school to its fifth national title as well as directing impressive runs of Big Ten championships and victories over archrival Michigan. The coach who came to Ohio State from Division I-AA Youngtown State University leaves OSU as one of the most recognizable figures in college football and all sports with a record of 106-22 at OSU. His winning percentage of .828 was better than the legendary Woody Hayes (.761).

It's a very attractive job, they'll land someone that will probably rub you the wrong way as well. Who they land will depend on how bad the final sanctions placed on the program are IMO. If the sanctions are reasonable, and he's interesting in coaching again, obviously Urban Meyer will be far and away the guy. But, there's a lot to play out still with all of this. Obviously, this step had to happen. I really wonder if the athletic director Gene Smith should also lose his job, as all of this happened under his watch. Also, my first reaction was this is Ohio State trying to sneak one past the goalie since it's Memorial Day, but apparently Sports Illustrated is putting up a story on their website later today, and I saw a tweet from one of their writers saying something to the point of the timing of this will make sense after that story is released. So my guess would be that story is the reason it happened today. I'm curious to see how Ohio State fans respond to those five players that got this snowball started and led to today, particularly Pryor. Some hate those players, but in the end, all Tress had to do was walk down the hall to the compliance office. The coverup was much worse than the crime. And OSU is still one of the top openings in all of football and the best in the Big Ten. Regardless of any sanctions depending on whether the school gets dinged, they will have a good hire. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 30, 2011 -> 08:41 AM) Incorrect, he resigned before more bad info came out this week, and it's coming. Its like you know that something bad happened, and has been happening for a while(Maurice Clarett, cough cough), but you are such a homer that you cant admit it even when you plainly state that the s*** is about to hit the fan. Just read through some of this http://www.sportsbybrooks.com/tag/ohio_state_buckeyes This stuff has been happening for a while Though Dohrmann burst on the national media scene reporting a college basketball story, as recently as last football season he broke a story that foreshadowed the impending mess wrought by Jim Tressel & Co. Last October, Dohrmann convinced former NFL agent Josh Luchs to admit on the record that the ex-agent paid thousands of dollars to dozens of college football players - along with providing meals, trips and concert tickets - in an Oct. 18, 2010, SI cover story titled, “Confessions of an Agent.” Interestingly, Luchs’ client list included notorious Ohio State football player Maurice Clarett and a well-funded pursuit of another former Buckeye star. Excerpt from Luchs’ account to Dohrmann: “In November 2005, Steve (Feldman) and I flew to Ohio State to talk to receiver Santonio Holmes. We met him outside the football building, and he said, ‘Listen, I want to save you the time. We don’t need to meet. I’ve been taking money from [an agent] the last couple years, and he’s been taking care of my family too.’ “Had it been 10 years earlier, I would have probably said, ‘Santonio, whatever he’s paying you, I’ll double it.’ But now, being at Gersh, I had Hollywood to sell. Let the other agents pay kids.” Feldman, a current NFL agent who has represented multiple pro football Hall of Famers over the past three decades, later confirmed to Dohrmann that Holmes told him and Luchs that an agent was paying the then-current Buckeye football player. Feldman also told HBO Real Sports last March that he actually witnessed that conversation between Luchs and Holmes. Through the New York Jets, Holmes denied the claims made by Luchs and Feldman. One former Buckeye football player though disagreed with that statement a few hours after Smith’s comments. Following Smith’s press conference, ex-Ohio State player Antonio Pittman, who played for the Buckeyes from 2004-06, Tweeted: This osu tattoo stuff is silly. Cats been gettin hookups on tatts since back in 01 After Pittman’s entry was retweeted by numerous followers, including media members, he deleted the Tweet. If Pittman is telling the truth, apparently the practice of tattoo-related, extra benefits has been going on for nearly a decade in Columbus. More from Riepenhoff: Pryor told The Dispatch last night that he borrowed cars from the dealership only when his own was in for repairs. As for the SUV he borrowed in 2008, Pryor said, “I wanted advice from some of my family and friends I trusted to see if it would be a good vehicle for me to maybe buy.” Pryor’s situation is remarkably similar to a 2004 ESPN The Magazine story in which Maurice Clarett claimed he was facilitated “loaner” vehicles by a local Columbus car dealership thanks to his status as a star Buckeye football player - with Ohio State coach Jim Tressel himself overseeing the transactions.
