White Sox have interest in Freddy Garcia

The time to trade Danks was this offseason. The Sox really want (and need) to win this year, so you have to imagine they want him pretty bad.

Peter Gammons said the Rangers tried to acquire Robinson Chirinos from the Cubs. They would have then sent Chirinos, Derek Holland, Engel Beltre, and Frank Francisco for Matt Garza. Considering Danks is actually quite a bit better than Matt Garza, and also probably a better extension candidate for Texas given his family is there, imagine what Kenny would have had to turn down if the Rangers made an offer. We could have gotten a massive haul.

The deadline deals don't happen this year unless we're picking up improvements. We're too goo to be too far out of it around the deadline to sell, and there's no 2012 if we don't win this year. But if we fail to win this year I imagine Danks, Floyd, Quentin, and even possibly the arb-eligible Alexei are gone. It would be one hell of a firesale. Hopefully this doesn't happen.

If the team is performing, there is no way you trade Danks during the season.

Even if for some reason they're not, it's far likelier we'd see a repeat of the crazy 2003 deadline IMO, where Kenny brought in Alomar, Everett, Schoenweis, and Sullivan. But I don't know how it would get to that point, considering the Tigers have lots of problems, the Royals and Indians are both looking at 90-loss seasons, and the Twins aren't exactly juggernauts despite being solid. Things would have to go seriously, seriously wrong to be out of it this year.

For those of you Freddy haters out there. Remember when the rest of the staff was sucking early on? Freddy went 4-1 in May and helped carry the team through June until they all got hot. Freddy was 4-0 in June as well. He did more than anyone expected and would be a great insurance policy for this ballclup!

Let's look at the list of starters or starter/relievers that will likely be in AA/AAA to start 2011. You are saying that one of these guys:

Lucas Harrell

Phil Humber

Charlie Shirek

Jeff Marquez

Johnnie Lowe

Brandon Hynick

Charlie Leesman

Matt Long

Justin Edwards

Terry Doyle

Dylan Axelrod

Is on par with Freddy Garcia? Right now? Sure, a couple of those guys may become decent starters at some point. But to open 2011? Really?

I just threw up reading this list!

The real problem with signing a Garcia is...what do you do with him if all of your other 5 starters are healthy. If you can get him on a deal where you can option him to the minors, that's perfect, but he ought to be able to find better than that just by going to NL clubs.

The other place to put him is the bullpen...but I don't think that works that great either. I noted earlier how I don't think he's a good bullpen fit with his health issues and with his history of needing a long time to warm up. Beyond that though, there are only 2 guys in the bullpen who can effectively be sent down to the minors, Sale and Infante, and frankly, I expect that both of them would outpitch Freddy as bullpen guys this year.

If everyone is healthy and there is no place for him, depending on how he's doing, he can be traded or Jackson could be traded. Someone is always looking for starting pitching. If the White Sox truly don't believe Peavy will be ready before May or June, I'd be shocked if they didn't try to add a veteran stopgap, and Freddy is probably the best one out there. If not Freddy, if I were KW, I'd look at Justin Duchscherer. If he is healthy enough, he can start at the beginning of the year, and you could slide him into the bullpen when and if Peavy is ready.

CARACAS, Venezuela (CBS) – The White Sox have said they want Freddy Garcia back, but a new report says he might want to go to the Bronx instead.

NESN reports Garcia wants to play for the New York Yankees for the coming season.

Quoted in the Venezuelan paper Meridiano, Garcia said, “My preference is to be with the New York Yankees, and it’s not unreasonable to have that in mind, because I’ve demonstrated that I can be useful.”

He went on to say a team like the Yankees would be “ideal for my age,” as would “playing in a successful, media-heavy, demanding division,” NESN reported.

Last week, MLB.com reported that the White Sox hoped to bring back Garcia for the 2011 season. The team had expressed interest in keeping Garcia as far back as the end of last season, but his name was later linked to virtually every team with pitching needs, according to MLB Fanhouse.

Garcia was the starting pitcher for Game 4 of the 2005 World Series, in which the White Sox won the title. He was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in December 2006, but was later placed on the disabled list for a shoulder injury.

After stints with the Detroit Tigers and New York Mets, Garcia returned to the White Sox in minor league contract, and started for the first time in three years for the Sox on Aug. 18, 2009. The Sox exercised their 2010 option on Garcia to keep him for another season afterward.

How long until Oney Guillen airs out Freddy Garcia's dirty laundry for "betraying" his father's friendship to play for the yanks?

I asked Oney that, and he called me "a delusional".

I'm sure he would if Freddy talked about how bad of a manager Ozzie was.
