When he managed the Sox he was young and very energetic. A real fresh start. Those were some pretty good teams he managed too. If it wasn't for the A's Dynasty of the early seventies the Sox may have won a championship then. Finished second to the A's, I think it was'72, who went on to win three straight world series. Probably played the A's tougher than the playoff and world series opponents did. He was one of those people who just seem to stand out.

He was such a breath of fresh air in the early 70's after two terrible seasons in 68 and 69.

Man, you aren't kidding about a breath of fresh air after those two seasons. I was in my early 20's when Tanner became manager and I went to more games in the Chuck Tanner-Dick Allen era than any other Sox era. It was an exciting time to be a White Sox fan. RIP Chuck. :gosox3:

I hear ya Ed...that '72 team was probably one of my all-time favorite teams. I remember going to a crapload of games during that era (I was 12 at the time). Dick Allen, Melton, Carlos May, Wilbur, Terry Forster, Goose Gossage, No Neck Williams...lead by Chuck Tanner. People can bag on Dick Allen all they want...but he was damn fun to watch play ball.

RIP Chuck Tanner.
