Rays with 4-0 lead. Looking like a 2 game lead for Boston with 10 left.

Boston:

4 vs Bal

3 at NY

3 at Bal

Tampa Bay:

4 at NY

3 vs Tor

3 vs NY

That's quite the uphill battle for the Rays.

EDIT: It's only the 4th? Why would you assume they're going to win?

Yeah, I thought it was like the 9th or something. And losing those two games to the O's earlier this week (especially the Price vs Simon game) were killer. I hope they can pull it off. It's going to be extremely difficult.

Buster_ESPN Buster Olney

Elias: largest September deficit any team has overcome was 8 1/2 games,by the '64 Cardinals. The Rays were nine games behind Boston Sept. 2.

All that accomplishes is that it gives people something to point to when the Sox are 7-10 games out of it next September.

The difference between the top and bottom of the leagues just keeps getting wider.

?

But won't we have like 4 different playoff teams from last year? The Yankees, Rangers, Phillies, and Braves repeat, the Reds, Giants, Twins, and Rays step out?

That's a lot more upward mobility than there is in the U.S. economy.

The wins are concentrated at the top of of the league. That doesn't sound like much of a distribution to me.

Because something like 10 teams every year can't.

GMAFB man...the team with what was it, the 28th highest salary in MLB made the WS last year after filing for bankruptcy, and then lost to a team that was #10 in salary.

The same cycle of teams loses every single year.

Of course, this is simply untrue. There are exactly 4 teams in MLB that have failed to make the playoffs in the last decade...2 of them I actually have some sympathy for, the Blue Jays and the Orioles, because of what they have to compete with...but it's been made clear over the past 4 years that you can build a winner in that division despite the Yankees and Red Sox with decent management.

The same teams lose each year because 2 of them are trapped behind the Yankees/Red Sox and haven't been smart enough to manage their way out of it, and 2 of them have done a horrible job of drafting, developing, and trading for the better part of 2 decades.

I don't think that number is right.

Sun wrecking havoc on the outfielders at Fenway. Boston got a double on a ball that Baltimore's LF lost, Baltimore score 2 on outfield defense by McDonald that makes Juan Pierre's early season defense look stellar. Two dropped balls and one poorly timed leap. Only one of those dropped balls can be attributed to the

sun.

...and as luck would have it, McDonald gets one of those runs back with a solo shot.

Edit: Another misplayed fly ball leading to Boston's second run. Looks like the OFs are just throwing themselves in the general direction of any ball hit deep.

6-2 O's.
