Balta1701
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 24, 2011 -> 11:41 AM) The White Sox haven't drafted well in recent years, so you have to go outside the organization if you want to win. Beckham and Sale were 2 guys anyone on Soxtalk could have drafted. Its about time the White Sox scouting department comes up with a 5th round gem. The Sox picked up 3 guys in 2008 who are already at the big league level. That's actually really good. With 6-7 years before guys hit FA, if you get 3 guys from every draft, nearly your entire roster will be people who are arb-eligibile or earlier. And there are still a handful of guys still on their way up who might make something of themselves. 2009 hasn't produced a major leaguer yet, but guys like Phegley, Thompson, Holmberg are working their way up, and we'll probably get at least a reliever or two out of some of those extra pitchers. The other thing that hurt us on the 2009 draft was being repeatedly snakebit by injuries.

Balta1701
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 24, 2011 -> 05:18 PM) Holmberg is with the D-backs Balta. As is Hudson. Making stupid mistakes with trades doesn't negate how solid the drafts were.

Balta1701
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 24, 2011 -> 11:06 PM) Not to mention Gio. Adam Russell, Brandon Allen, Gio, Fields. That 2004 draft isn't looking like a terrible draft in hindsight, it meets the "3 serviceable big leaguer" goal I laid out previously, just got some guys in the upper rounds who took 5+ years to make it...and got traded away before they did. witesoxfan
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 25, 2011 -> 07:59 AM) Adam Russell, Brandon Allen, Gio, Fields. That 2004 draft isn't looking like a terrible draft in hindsight, it meets the "3 serviceable big leaguer" goal I laid out previously, just got some guys in the upper rounds who took 5+ years to make it...and got traded away before they did. Russell is terrible, Fields got 15 minutes in 2007 and hasn't done anything since (and is now in Japan), and Brandon Allen has all of 196 PAs in the majors (with a strikeout rate of 34.7% at the MLB level). Gio is the only one who is serviceable and he's been much, much more than simply serviceable.
ChiliIrishHammock24
@MDGonzales Mark Gonzales Sox reliever Tony pena says he's out for rest of '11, will see Dr. Jobe in So. Cal later this week, surgery likely on arm I'm sure he has thrown his last pitch with the White Sox, or at least I hope so. Dick Allen
Russell just got waived. Brandon Allen strikes out almost as much as Dunn. Gio is terrific and Fields was so serviceable he went to Japan. You're not going to win if these are the guys you're building a team with. Making it to the majors is fine, although over the years MLB's rosters have been littered with players drafted by the White Sox, only most of them are pretty bad. If you want to build a team through your farm system, you need difference makers, not guys that make it but top out at mediocre.
