flavum
Humber will take Peavy's place. He's definitely stretched out the most; doing the best.
WilliamTell
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 20, 2011 -> 02:17 PM) A healthy Jake Peavy seems to be something of a myth. I would agree. Wish it would come true then maybe he could become a legend around these parts.
Jordan4life_2007
This is why I dismiss spring training fluff. Not surprised at all. The Humber era is upon us.

flavum
^ And with that, Peavy needs to shut up and go away until he's ready. Humber is the 5th starter as far as I'm concerned.

flavum
Having this set in a little now, they would be absolutely stupid if they let him pick up a ball for ten days. Just shut him down, and start him over. Humber should start April 9th, and they should prepare him for that.

Albatross or however you spell it contract for a Mark Prior clone. You realize he hasn't even been scratched from Thursday yet, right? It obviously doesn't look good, but this is more than likely symptomatic of the lat injury and him not being able to go through normal offseason workouts. Chances are he'll miss some starts, start the season on the DL, get a few starts in Charlotte and be ready by May.

I wouldn't necessarily shut him down...it's possible that could just inflame it more because then he'd have to rebuild the work. I'd probably go easy on him if he feels up to pitching Thursday, cut back on his workload a bit, and look for mid-April instead of opening day. southsider2k5
http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2011/...estionable.html Shoulder tendinitis slows Peavy's comeback March 20, 2011 2:10 PM | No Comments By Mark Gonzales GLENDALE, Ariz. - Jake Peavy is suffering from tendinitis in the rotator cuff of his right shoulder that could put his Thursday start against the Cubs and his April 6 start in question. Peavy said he has felt gradual discomfort since after his first start March 4 against the Los Angeles Angels, but the Sox say the discomfort isn't related to his detached latissimus dorsi muscle suffered last July. Nevertheless, Peavy said the next 48 hours will determine whether he can pitch Thursday. One Sox source said they already are planning for Plan B, which is Phil Humber taking Peavy's spot in the rotation. Peavy, who threw 5 2/3 innings and 83 pitches on Saturday against Oakland, initially thought he was suffering from general soreness but the discomfort increased and became more acute. "What I'm experiencing is a culmination of start after start after start," Peavy said. "It's kind of been coming since that first time. Like I said, (it's) getting a little more uncomfortable and uncomfortable as I keep going, and you want to nip that in the bud and not let it mount into a bigger issue than what it is. But at the same time, I'm thinking it's part of getting back into the routine and getting back in. "I threw for an awfully long time without any setbacks. Once you start going close to game speed and game speed like I have, things can pop up. You're asking your body to do exactly what you're going to do during the regular season, and it's caused a little bit of discomfort. It's a small step back, and we're going to re-evaluate and see where we go from there." Peavy was diagnosed Sunday morning by the Sox's doctors and medical staff and given anti-inflammatory pills. He admitted that if he can't pitch Thursday, he won't be ready to pitch on April 6 at Kansas City. Peavy thought this ailment might be the ''bump in the road" that the Sox were informed could happen during his recovery. "We've been going full-steam ahead since we started this thing," Peavy said. "We were told to expect this. I wouldn't buy into it, and I never expected it. But we have. I'm not going to sit here and say it's a setback yet, but certainly things have slowed down." Peavy will be re-evaluated on Monday for another series of tests with the hope he can at least play catch. "I doubt that I'll go out there and throw a bullpen (Monday)," Peavy said. "But Thursday has not been ruled out throwing against the Cubs on my regular turn. We'll see how it all plays out, but I certainly hope the anti-inflammatories get in the system and like I said calm things down where we can get out and stay on schedule (to pitch April 6)." maggsmaggs
I am not too worried nor surprised. I didn't think he would be ready by April 1 as is, so this doesn't surprise me. Hopefully he just misses the next start and he is back on track for a mid-April debut, which is fine by me. Humber can be decent for two starts.
