And yet, here were are, still waiting for this guy to throw a meaningful pitch for the Chicago White Sox.

You're not allowed to be negative or critical about anything Sox related. Six straight years of failure (unless you count a pathetic playoff appearance in 2008) and we are supposed to blindly have faith and think this year will be different.

Never said there was anything wrong with thinking Rose > Paul. But my MJ/Reggie Miller analogy was spot on. I know it's been over a decade since we last had a superstar, but let's not act like the virgin geek going to his first strip club (in essence overrating Rose because it's been so long since we've had a player of his caliber).

What on Earth are you arguing then? You admit Rose > Paul (yay, you DO have eyes!). The birth certificates do not lie... the player values are WAY different, yet I'm a homer? It makes no sense.

This season. You are declaring setbacks before they even occur. Might as well wait a little bit before we decide he's not going to pitch this season. The guy had a serious surgery in the offseason and we're b****ing that he's not pitching 3 weeks into the season.

First it was a shoulder and everyone was sure he was done, now its his lat and everyone is sure he is done.

How about waiting for some actual information?

We've been waiting for Jake Peavy since mid-2009. Forget him. He's Rich Harden.

Please relegate discussion of winning Chicago sports teams to their proper venues.

No matter how you spin it, leaving a rehab start with discomfort much earlier than planned is a setback.

Are you sure he wasn't scheduled to only throw 15 pitches?

Right. I'm all about the Bulls winning, but this is a Sox thread. I'm a little overloaded with the Bulls right now with the wall to wall discussions on both of the radio stations. I've waited all winter for Sox stuff and I don't need it tainted with Bull/Bears talk.

And he was required to give up three runs. It's a confidence builder. Build him up, tear him down, and if there's time build him up again.

Well, I didn't mean it quite so seriously as Chet :lolhitting

You can't have a setback when you haven't even returned yet.

Well those people aren't wrong as he still hasn't pitched. When you're talking about a pitcher who keeps hurting some area of his pitching arm, it's pretty impossible to be optimistic on the outlook of said pitcher.

This team overall is going to be just fine but I have no confidence in saying the same about Jake Peavy.

I don't know, man. That really depends on your definition of fine. I can still see them winning the division, but I don't think even that will pull the type of attendance that the team needs to cover its payroll as the divisional race will likely be one between a bunch of gimps just hobbling to the finish line. They can take the division, but they'll get rolled in the playoffs like 2008.

Eh, we'll see. I still really like this team overall. The bullpen obviously needs to get their s*** together but there's a hell of a lot more talent on this roster than there was in 08, that's not even debatable. And maybe the biggest difference is that we have 4 pitchers(even with out Peavy) who can win us a game in a playoff series where we only had 3 in 08 and our 4th had to pitch game 1 and everyone knew that was an automatic loss going in. If we get in(huge IF obviously) we'll have a chance to make some noise.

I am just saying that I don't consider it a setback when he hasn't even made much progress towards returning.

Him being at 70 pitches and having discomfort in the lat while building to 90 is a setback - and it's not a good sign - no matter how you take it. Let's see what the reports bring today... Bummer.

White Sox have insurance on Peavy for reported around 70% of his contract?

http://www.csnchicago.com/04/19/11/Kaplan-...487&qv=1#bp

Still sucks to lose all those players in the trade, but at least we apparently won't be on the hook for all that money.

The important detail left out is what is left out of that article.

What does it take to trigger a claim? Missed starts? DL time? A specific minimum length of DL time?

Yeah, I was looking for that too. It seems like details of the insurance must be rather unknown, except for the figure of 70%. I wonder if it means if he only gets paid 30% of his money while he is on the DL. So maybe that means he can lose a total of 70% of his entire yearly salary if he misses the whole 2011 season? Not sure.

What exactly is you definition of a setback? Peavy was continually increasing his pitches looking to return to the team. He felt discomfort and had to leave early, not making forward progress towards the desired pitch count. I would even say that his progress was "set back".
