caulfield12 Posted April 11, 2011 Share Posted April 11, 2011 (edited) After last season and the early returns in 2011, I was thinking that maybe the White Sox system wasn't as inept as previously thought. If you took Gio Gonzalez (consistently hitting 92-96 MPH on Sunday)/Daniel Hudson/Clayton Richard/Brandon McCarthy and added in Buehrle AND finally Garland (we can take a "half" credit!) and Sale (based solely on potential as a starter), that's a relatively solid 6-7 guys over a decade. At least one every two years. (Yes, I know quite a few will argue about the inclusion of Garland as a Sox prospect or doubt that McCarthy will last with the A's IF/WHEN Harden he returns and even that Sale is too fragile and mechanically unorthodox to last as a starter). I'm sure the minor league experts could cite 5-7 organizations that have produced 10+ starters on Opening Day rosters (or the DL), but I'd guess we're somewhere between 15th and 18th in the majors in this category in that you'd "expect/predict" every organization, on average, to produce five starters that are on Opening Day rosters. Of course, the second part of this is the current lack of depth of our minor league system in this area (due to the Hudson trade and Sale being in the pen for now)...but it's not out of the realm of possibility another McCarthy/Hudson/DeLosSantos type will fly through the system and emerge. Which one of the four former White Sox pitching prospects, if any, would you trade John Danks or Gavin Floyd "straight up" for, based on their respective currrent contract situations (Floyd through 2012 and club option for 2013, Danks through 2012) Between Sale and Santos, would you trade either of them straight up for Gonzalez, McCarthy or Richard? Why/why not? I would trade one of them (probably Santos) for Gonzalez without even thinking about it. But definitely not McCarthy or Richard. McCarthy's an injury waiting to happen and he's not that great of a pitcher to start with. Clayton Richard would be pretty mediocre in the AL and in our park. I do want Hudson back though. McCarthy is awful, and Gonzalez and Richard's numbers are inflated because of making a lot of their starts in huge pitcher parks. With that said, I'd still trade Floyd for Gonzalez in a heart beat, but it's more because I am not a Gavin believe at all. Hudson is okay, but I'd still rather have Edwin Jackson. I'll buy that for Richard, but Gio was still an above average pitcher on the road last year. 697 OPS against him on the road, 3.92 ERA, OPS+ of 87. Both those guys are really freakin good, on the other hand, McCarthy is just injured all the team and Richard at best would be a 5th starter if he were on the Sox right now. Most clients listen to their agent, but there are definitely some clients who give explicit instructions. I think that if Jackson continues to have great success with the Sox, enjoys his time here, he could potentially resign. Id say the chances are less than 25%, but it could happen. Exactly, Edwin Jackson is represented by the agent that is known for getting the most money. There is a reason he chose Boras. I'm not saying it's completely impossible for him to resign, but it's pretty improbable, especially when you consider that either he or Buehrle have to go if the Sox truly plan on moving Sale to the rotation. A lot can change in 3 years, especially when the client has considerably more money. 25% is not good odds, I just wouldnt put it past Jackson to go against Boras if he felt it was the right decision.
