zenryan
I took Spanish in high school about 12 years ago and dont really remember much. Now I really want to learn another language so I'm thinking about trying out Rosetta Stone. I'd like to learn French but I think its more practical for me to take the Spanish lessons, especially here in Florida. Curious to see if anyone Soxtalkers have used this software. If so, was it a good or bad experience?
bmags
It's very expensive and I doubt it's efficacy is that good. I have heard good things about livemocha? Not sure it's on the same level but it does offer some more interaction from what I hear.
lostfan
I've used Rosetta Stone (ummm... sure... it was "expensive"... yeah that's the ticket) and Live Mocha (which sounds suspiciously like a porn site). I haven't gotten too deep into live mocha but that's a good way to get some feedback on how you're doing and to practice some speech more openly. If you took Rosetta Stone in high school you'll probably start to feel it coming back really fast, and Level 1 will be pretty boring to you and you'll pick it up pretty fast. It starts to get really difficult about halfway thru level 2. Now I'm in, I think unit 2 of level 3 and I'm way past anywhere I was in high school. The only bad thing I have to say about Rosetta Stone is it doesn't ever tell you "why" you do something so verb tenses start to get confusing when you learn the different forms of past tense. Google translate comes in handy and some of the websites that explain that kind of thing to you.
ChiliIrishHammock24
I am a sophomore in college, and I have to take 4 semesters of spanish before I graduate. I am dreading it. I will be taking 8 credit hours of spanish over the summer. I'm so f***ed. I took 1 semester in HS my freshman year, got a D, and was kicked out of class more often then not. Nothing in college for me thank god. Well the college I went to my freshman year required no foreign language. I didn't plan on transferring to Ball State, but I did, and they make T-Comm majors take 4 semesters. I just looked at the classes I am going to take over the summer, and the spanish class is 3 hours long, 4 days a week. It's going to be hell. DukeNukeEm
Rosetta Stone is incredibly annoying to try and download or torrent. I've gotten close a lot of times, but it always just craps out.

Lucky you, Thankfully I didn't have to take it, but I tried one semester at ISU and didn't last two classes before the teacher told me I should drop it. Be Good
I used it for Mandarin, it was very helpful. But like someone mentioned earlier halfway into level 2 it gets difficult. From there on out I find myself needing to repeat each lesson more than 2 times. In order to have real success with Rosetta Stone I think you need another kind of exposure to the language. For me, having Chinese friends helps. And especially, going to Flushing all the time and literally being surrounded by the entire culture really helps too. I figure that was my moral comeuppance for stealing Edited May 1, 2011 by lostfan
Texsox
I had the college requirement waved because I worked in Mexico for a few years. If not, I would have been screwed. When I worked in Mexico the single guys all picked up Spanish much quicker than the married guys. It must have been because they had more time to practice. Swingandalongonetoleft
I took Spanish in high school and I considered Rosetta Stone, but I decided that it would be easier to just teach myself. I use my Spanish/English dictionary often, watch Spanish tv when I get the chance to, and even picked up the Paso A Paso textbooks I used in high school on Amazon on the cheap. I'm also a volunteer at Literacy DuPage and my student speaks very little English, so I pick up bits of knowledge here and there through that. I don't know if I would have made as much progress as I have with a structured program like Rosetta Stone.
chimpy2121
I want to try to learn some French because I'm going to be working the Tour de France in July. I just got back from working an IRL race in Brazil and it def. sucks not speaking the native language; makes things very difficult.

I'll be working the race for Versus. I still don't have all of the details, but the TV truck moves with the whole race. I need to talk to the guy who did it last year for our company and find out more details.
