ROBIN COMES ABOARD

1988: The White Sox and general manager Larry Himes made one of the great picks in franchise history with the selection of Robin Ventura out of Oklahoma State in the first round of the amateur draft. Ventura, a third baseman, was the 10th overall pick of the draft and was in the bigs by the end of the 1989 season. He became a regular in 1990 and quickly became one of the most popular players in team history.

Don't people argue that Ventura was one of the greatest college players ever? Why did he last until the tenth pick?

The school of thought was that he was going to hit for a high average and not much power. Plus he was defensively challenged at that stage.

I was so glad we drafted him with the blackhole we had at 3B. Yes this was the timeframe of ultimate in failures when we tried Kenny Williams at the hot corner.

Ohhh lordie did we ever, since 1980 till robin took over full time we had:

Jim Morrison

Aurelio Rodriguez

Vance law

Scott Fletcher

Luis Salazar

Steve Lyons

Donnie hill

Kenny Williams

Lorenzo gray

Carlos Martinez

Bobby Bonilla

Tim Hulett

Eddie Williams

Wayne tolleson

Anybody else?

That's a bit funny.

I wonder if Robin's number will ever be retired.

Kevin Bell, Junior Moore, Gerry Royster, Fran Mullins.

Ron Santo and a host of others if you wanna talk about the 70's. Actually Kevin Bell is more from the 70's, too.

I remember people were always waiting for him to break on through at the MLB level.
