Trade away their best player from last season doesnt make much sense to me.

Getting a SF who can shoot helps Irving and Thompson.

That extra pick will help them shore up next year.

They are basically doing the Rich Man's rebuild, trying to get as many 1st rounders as possible.

it does if you are trying to stockpile draft picks and controllable salaries.

Taking Valanciunas(sp?) and having another poor season while keeping your best player seems better fit to me. Than you go into next season with needs at SF/SG which are probably the 2 easiest positions to fill.

Tell that to the Bulls.

They have Luol Deng at SF who isn't amazing but I think barring a handful of teams would start anywhere. SG yes, but the Bulls just seemingly don't try to properly address that position ever... one time they had a potential candidate for it he was traded within a week. I blame that position being a blackhole for the Bulls on management.

I can't see a whole NBA season being missed. Maybe half, but can't see a whole season. Maybe I am just hoping.

This is a league where the owners right now think that the players will break financially within a few months. They think that because that's what happened last time.

The Owners will wait this one out unless the courts get involved, and the NFL precedent may soon suggest that they wont (if the next court rules against the union which seems to be the expectation)

Union chief Billy Hunter said Thursday "it's obvious the lockout will happen tonight" after players and owners failed to reach a new collective bargaining agreement, potentially putting the 2011-12 season in jeopardy.

Despite a three-hour meeting Thursday and a final proposal from the players -- which NBA leaders said would have raised average player salaries to $7 million in the sixth year of the deal -- the sides could not close the enormous gulf that remained in their positions.

"The gap is too great," Hunter said.

The CBA expires at midnight, after which all league business is officially on hold, starting with the free agency period that would have opened Friday.

The NBA players' union has announced the league is locking out its players. ESPN.com Topics has all of the latest news, along with history of the NBA's labor situation. Topics Page »

Commissioner David Stern said "with some sadness" he would recommend later Thursday to the labor relations committee that the first lockout since the 1998-99 season be imposed.

"Needless to say we're disappointed that this is where we find ourselves," deputy commissioner Adam Silver said.

Hunter said the union made a "moderate" new financial proposal, but it wasn't enough to keep the two sides at the bargaining table.

Hunter said the two sides plan to meet again in the next two to three weeks.

NBA announces it will lockout. It's the first work stoppage the NBA has seen since LeBron James took the floor in the 4th quarter.

That accounts tweets never get old.

So if there is a lockout for a whole season, wonder what does with the situations of Dwight Howard and Chris Paul.

Do they both bolt to say New Jersey and link up there, or does CP3 try to join Orlando for 12-13? Can they even do that without having to waive / trade Arenas and Hedo?

Teams that have some expiring contracts this season and cap room heading into the next off-season, could find themselves in really good shape, depending on what a new CBA will eventually look like.

I have to believe the NBA Owners wouldn't just let 2 years worth of free agents hit the market. Hell, Derrick Rose would be a free agent (possibly restricted) in that case.

Just beyond awful as as a pure basketball fan. Also sad to see guys stripped of a year in their primes (or early development I.E. Griffin, Wall, etc.. etc.. etc..)

Football and Basketball in lockouts... if that holds up, this fall and winter is going to be hell (not just weather wise) especially if you don't like hockey (though I like the Blackhawks) or college football/basketball.
